I posted this in the reloading-varmint section because it did not seem to fit in any other reloading section.
Anywho-
Berget now has thick jacket VLD's in at least 6.5mm and 7mm. See here under "Products-long range".
For anyone that has overspun Berger's origional VLD's to distruction as I have, this is a good thing. I'll have to give them another try.

Bend, would this bullet still be considered at long range hunting bullet?
It is not listed with the hunting bullets, so I assume that these are not hunting bullets?
My 1:7.5 twist at 3000fps shoots great, how fast do you have to push for destruction? I have read this elsewhere as well, very interesting.

Berger does not recommend the THICK for hunting. Seems it does not expand like the regular VLD and SMK's due to a thicker jacket.
I have overspun Berger 6.5mm 140g VLD's at 3100 fps and 6.5mm 142g SMK's at 3250 fps with a 1:8 twist, 28 inch PacNor barrel in 264 Winmag.
Here is an in-depth discussion at Benchrest.

Bend, You were right that was an in-depth discussion, very interesting and informative. One thing that they never really touched on was number of lands and groove's , just from my own experience every bullet failure that I have had personally has been with a 3 groove barrel and all but 1 barrel has been a Pac-Nor. from reading this discussion on Benchrest I'm thinking that the wider land of the 3 groove is causing more friction thus causing more heat. The one thing I know for sure is that I will stay with 5 or 6 groove barrel's if they are a fast twist for VLD bullet's. B wish they would make a 6mm 105gr VLDthick or the 338 VLD they have been promising for a few years. btw is your 264WM a 3 groove ?

B-
Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Yes, my PacNor is a three grover. It might be the problem but I doubt it. The amount of surface contact of the lands on a bullet are near the same for all land/grove ratios. A more likely reason would be the new mix of fast twist rates, heavy for cal bullets (long), long barrels and the slowest powders for a longer amount of "barrel time" enabling friction heat to build enough to cause failure. But, heck, I'd still be guessing.
