If your the gentleman that recommended a value of $330...my response is the same.
For $330 it'll go in the closet and end up at an estate sale when I'm too dead to care

I don't usually get involved in something like this when I don't have a horse in the race. But I am seeing 2 vertical holes on the after part of the receiver and some damage to the wood just behind them. You say there is a repaired tang crack. The wood appears to have been sanded at one time or another. I can see extra holes on the side of the receiver. The rear sight is missing and sling swivels have been added. More likely than not it has been aftermarket drilled and tapped for the scope mounts. The receiver has some sort of markings from something. It' an EG in a very common caliber. It's collector value has long since depleted. It is just a hunter/shooter. IMO, in this particular case, $330.00 is a fair price. I am not posting this to tick anybody off. I am just calling it the way I see it. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Well said LBK.
Life is too short to hunt with an ugly rifle.
I see a parts rifle..with the best part (reciever) being ruined.
330 is generous. The owner might could better grab it before the offerer comes to his senses.

Receiver looks to be drilled for an Echo side mount and a Redfield 102 receiver sight with the wood relieved for the sight. Saw the listing on one of the auction sites earlier today. Wishful thinking although it is possible that some fool will be parted from his money.

Wow...you guy's are something. All I did is post a rifle for sale. If your not interested in buying it why would you think anyone is interested in your comments. Why would you feel compelled to comment at all...I was raised differently I reckon. Where I'm from you don't mingle in someone else's business unless you've got good a dog in the hunt.

There was no misrepresentation on my part, no fraudulent activity. All imperfections were addressed and pictures are posted. If you feel the price is too high...don't buy it!

Bottom line is...if you were'nt interested in the ad for whatever reason, move on. But to spend time trying to persuade others not to purchase is just downright childish and meddlesome.

This particular section of the campfire seems to be filled with people that live to see their words in print and have way to much time on their hands.

I'm sure the campfire is chock full of good folks, but this particular section concerns me greatly.

I'm sure some of you are just dying to respond and are drafting your defensive response right now, but I assure you it won't be read by me.

Glad that you won't be reading this Swamphunter. The comments that you got are the price you pay for advertising that POS in a Savage Collectors Forum. Since you've listed it here we all have a dog in this hunt. This ain't a used Savage for sale forum. ;\) Best that you'd have put this rifle in the free classifieds and let it go at that if your skin is that thin.

George,

I tend to disagree with you on this one. Quite a few of us have bought "used" Savages right here on the collectors forum. Swampy is right. He DID post pics, and the discrepencies were there to the eye. Swampy wants to put is back in the closet rather than accept someone's offer of $330. So be it. It is what it is. $330.00 for THAT gun is more than fair. In Virginia, the supply and demand may get him more, but if that gun were for sale in the northeast it would not bring $330.00 unless it was bought by someone who just didn't know any better. BTW, by placing it on the internet it IS in fact for sale in the northeast. Wonder what our members from downunder think of this rifle???

Not that I'm in favor of anybody using the collector's forum for sales (that's why we have the classifieds), but posting negative comments on it... not cool. PM's are available if you feel the need to point out flaws to the seller.

LBK,

I don't think that we really disagree all that much. The main thrust of my post was not to bad mouth his rifle but rather that in this forum you post your pictures and take your chances and if you can't take the comments then you're probably better off not posting the pictures. In my first post referring to his rifle I don't know that I said anything derogatory about the gun but rather was giving my opinion of what the five holes drilled on the left side of the receiver were for. I do think that his idea of the value of the rifle is optimistic. I agree that rifles have been bought and sold here in the past and I don't have any problem with that. What I do have a problem with is someone that seems to think that they're going to put their kids through college with the proceeds from selling a rifle like the one in question here. It has no collector value and when told that Swampy started to throw a hissy fit. I guess that what I'm trying to say here is that if you don't like the answer that you get then perhaps you're better off not asking the question in the first place. I recently sold a 99F in what I think is in a lot better condition than Swampy's gun. It certainly didn't have the five extra holes in the side. I started the auction at $275 and it sold for $385. I think that was realistic. I don't think Swampy is being realistic and I do think that he's being a bit childish in attacking the forum because we don't think that his rifle is worth what he thinks it's worth.

OK, I'm getting down off the soapbox before I fall off of it! ;\)

Anytime anyone puts something up for sale on the internet or anywhere else they should realize that someone may not agree with their price , no need to be thin-skinned about it.

As regards the pricing on this or any other 99 , I have said this before & will say it again.

Some people get their hands on a 99, no matter what the condition, they think they have a gold mine

I would give $200 for the 99 that started this thread , but only because I think the scope is worth $100
