Well, I just got my new Savage 99T in .303 sav., and I must say that I am very pleased! Besides the under portion of the receiver being worn from carry, the rest of the rifle is in mighty fine condition!!! No extra receiver holes, no extra holes in the wood!!! The bore is real bright and shiny with very deep grooves. All serial numbers match, and this serial number is quite low for a "T", 349129. The front of the receiver is also stamped "T" along with the butt stock being stamped "T". Case colored lever is still quite strong. Interesting tid-bits: As seen in the photos below, the SVG is also stamped on the inside of the butt plate!?! While removing the butt plate to check the numbers, I noticed something in the butt stock screw hole. After removing the "goodies", I realized that it was a home made emergency fire starting kit. You can check this out in the pics below.

Let me know what you guys think?????

P.S. Correct rear sight is on the way!!! ;\)

Thanks, Mike...

Very nice.

I bought a 99 take down rifle that also had a "fire starter" kit in the butt stock screw hole.

Were the butt plates normally stamped with the S/N's?

Nice grab there! \:\)

Was that a 20 or 22 inch barrel there, Mike?

Gottagetta99, yes, the buttplates for 1899's and 99's were always stamped with the serial numbers up until around 1950 or so.

Mike, that's GORGEOUS!! Congrats! Never seen one with a SVG stamp on the inside of the buttplate before. That's a hangover special, I'm thinking.

I'd say that front sight might be original to the rifle. Was there a rear sight when received? If so, what was it.

PS...nice rifle and in a good caliber for a collector. \:\)

Mike,

Only a couple of flaws that I can see with your rifle. They are the little spots of light surface rust and the other major flaw is the fact that this is not in my gun safe. This rifle needs to be in a much drier climate than New York state and so I would love to resolve that problem for you.

Where do I send the post dated four party out of state check? Seriously, that is a beautiful example of a model T and one that you were damn lucky to find. Congratulations are in order.

Dave

Rgr223cal;
Congrats on your new find, I picked up a 99T in 300 Savage
a couple of months ago, butt plate replaced with a rubber
pad. I thought it was drilled and tapped, until I got it
home and realized it was a Stith mount that used existing
holes already on gun. Is the 303 the rarest of the calibers
in the 99T?

Jericho, I think that would be the 22 HP as rarest.

Thank for all of the compliments! In the past 2 years I have owned 3 savage 1895's, and 36 Savage 1899/99's. I still have a bunch that are nice collectors, but I have been trying to find the perfect hunter! I have now found it. It feels more right, actually just right, than all of the others that I have tried for hunting. Last year I hunted successfully with my 1923 Savage 99 "G" in .300 sav. with a peep sight. It is a great hunter, but this "T" tops it big time. I am either going to top this rifle with a Lyman 30 1/2, or a Stith with a Norman Ford Texan. I will have to try both to see which feels better. I will also now have to find myself a supply/donations of .303 sav ammo for hunting ;\) . It just might be time to start reloading.

Rick:
The rear sight was removed by me and not original. I posted pictures for you in a PM... As for the front sight, I have been told by 2 old timer sight guys, and a select few members of the 24, that the early "T"'s did not have the red bead front sight. This front sight has no evidence that it has ever been removed or even been drifted. It looks perfect. Do you have any other thoughts on the front sight?

Hemlock_Ranger:
I wanted to install the compass but Les won't let me have one!!!

P.S. Original rear sight is already on it's way, pics coming soon!!! I will just need to find an elevator...

Thanks, Mike...
