Yeah, yeah, I know..... '335. 'Tis what I'm running right now.

Anyway, has anyone actually tried '15 in the .223AI? It works great in my '06, and my 9.3x62. Should work great in the .375 that'll be down the line a bit.

Figured I'd check some figures to see about the .223AI. A level full case of the stuff is 30 gr. in my FF LC brass, and if I get it to settle in enough, should give me within 100 fps (or less) of '335, and with less pressure.

Was wondering if anyone had actually tried and what the results were.

No. I just PM'd Brad crying the blue on FPS. Care to share any of your charges with any powders ??

So far I've only tried TAC and Benchmark.

I haven't tried it but have been running varget (approx same burning rate) with the 75 amax. It works great with the heavy bullets. I also got great accuracy with the 50's but the velocity was on the slow side, its just a smidge slow for lighter bullets.

Why not? I believe that the military uses it.

Am thinking WGM asked this same question, as he was using 335 too. Might PM him and see if he's done anything.....

I've tried it.. actually it works better in the AI for accuracy than it does in the 223...

I like '15 with the 75's, but I've never used it in anything lighter.

Sorry, I do not use the RL powder because of the temperature variable.

Have been using H4895 and Benchmark. 3550-3600 with a 26" barrel with either powder and the powder is at the base of the neck.

As somebody else stated, accuracy is excellent at distance as well.

Use 50gr, 52 gr, 55 gr, 69gr, and 75 Amax.

50/52/53/55's running in the 3550-3600 speed. 69's in the 3275-3300 range. 75 Amax in the 3150 range.

Best part...5-6 loads on the brass...and no trimming needed.

Forgot, 52 gr match HP's start to keyhole at 650 yards. 50/55 SP/VMax, 69 gr HPBT's, and 75 AMax all fly VERY well to 1000 yards. 50's are done though...not enough physics left in them at 1000. 55's...1000 is about it - 16" groups. 69's and 75's are still flying well.

Tom,

After talking with you on the other website, I really need to try some Benchmark to see if I can get the extra oomph your seeing w/75's. This past year or so I've gradually been shifting to shooting more 75 A-max's than 50's...I'm at the point now to where I'm almost exclusively shooting the 75.

Brad.

I've been shooting 40g and 50g BTs. How would you compare hits on squirrels at 350+ yards with the 75g V-max to the lighter bullets?

Wow worried about temps but using 4895, that is some squirrely powder in 223, gets temp sensitive and often to pressure before speed....

RL15 is fine, many use it.

For what I am after, speed in competition, and the caveat that I have not used the 223AI becaues its illegal in my game, N540 and N550 by far gave the best top end with least pressure. And that Ramshot TAC was pretty close.

You must be thinking of the OLD H4895 - the new, Hodgdon Extreme H4895 is advertised as being more consistent in temperature extremes.

http://www.hodgdon.com/extreme.html

In two 1:9 twist 223 bolt rifles, AR15 with 1:9 twist, & three 223 AI's, I get 3000 fps for the standard 223's with 69 gr HPBT's, 3150 for 75 gr AMax's in the 223 AI's, and 3300 with 69 gr HPBT's in the 223 AI's.

The 75 gr AMax cut the prairie dogs in half. Past 500 yards is when the 75 gr bullets show how they fly and still have good energy left.

A lot of people use the RL15 in a standard .223 with heavier bullets, so it should work. I've been told it is the standard powder for long range match shooters with the 77's.

You must be talking about OLD RL-15. It has been temp stable since the military adopted it, which has been for some time.
