what is one of these worth in SS? Are they reasonable barrels? I have the encore muzzleloader and one of my hunting buddies wants to sell me his SS .270 barrel for $270.00. I don't know how a certerfire Encore shoots as I have only had the muzzleloader. I am not sure I am interested in it as I have a .270 in a Weatherby Mark V as it is.

I have a .308 barrel and I am satisfied. However, were I in the market for another caliber I would likely go with a Bergara from either Midway or Bellm's T/Cs. Mike Bellm is called the guru of Encores and Contenders by many and he endorses and sell Bergaras. Check his website. You can get a new one for around $200 and be assured you're not getting someone else's lemon.

An Encore in 270 Winchester is not going to do anything that your Weatherby Mark V won't do. Also, in my opinion, $270 is WAY too high. I have bought GOBS of Encore and Contender barrels in new or slightly used excellent condition and rarely have I paid over $200 for them. If you really want the barrel, I would say $220 would be a fair price for a stainless steel barrel though not a great bargain. Fluted Pro Hunter barrels go for a bit more though I wouldn't pay more for one since the older barrels are just as good. In my opinion, the flutes are bling.
With one exception, all of my Contender/Encore barrels have been T/C barrels. I've been very satisfied with their performance and have been extremely satisfied with Thompson/Center on those occasions when repair was needed on one of their products. For this reason, I have no desire to try Bergara barrels. The good thing I've heard about Bergara barrels is their price; maybe I'll get one some day but I'll have to hear quite a few more good things about them before I do.
I have an Encore 270 Winchester barrel, by the way, and it shoots fine; it shoots very well in fact.

some buddy! You should sleep with his girlfriend for trying to tag you like that. 210.00 often at midway rarely over 250.00 anywhere. I saw them at sportsman's warehouse for 200 bucks right before hunting season. I say go for his girlfriend.
