I bought a 223 Hawkeye in Jan. & then yesterday I bought a Bushmaster "Predator". So far I have just bought loaded rounds so I will have brass when I need to reload.
I know that some brass has a crimped primer. What do you have to do or have on hand to reload these? De-prime them like all the rest? What do you use to remove the crimp so you can reprime?

The best available is the Dillon Swager. I prefer to swage the crimp instead of cutting it out. The Dillon is 8 times faster as well.

A square nosed VLD chamfer tool in an RCBS Case Mate or chucked in a drill.

The best tool to remove the primers with would be the Wilson depriming tool. It is a rod with an end that fits in the flash hole and is used with a hammer or arbor press. A normal depriming pin in a die will bend.

I have never had a depriming pin in my RCBS dies bend when decapping crimped .223, .308, or 30/06. I do, however, keep a few spare pins on hand.

I've de-primed hundreds of crimped mil brass in my Redding fl die, and never once bent the primer pin.
As far as removing the crimp you can use a swager, which takes awhile if processing 100's of rounds, or you can cut it out with various tools. I have 1000 cases to process and will be cutting them out with a chamfer tool on the lathe.

Thanks guys. I picked up a few 20 rnd boxes of plinking (fmj) rounds when I bought the rifle and notice it is L.C. brass. I also ordered some 55 gr V-Max from Cabelas in their bulk deal and it is also stamped L. C. I am assuming the Lake City is a crimped primer, am I right?
Will be getting the "Predator" sighted in this week and trying it out next weekend, if I can have any luck calling coyotes in the Colorado mountains.

Ah, but since others have loaded it since Lake City did would the primers pockets remain crimped?

Yes, at least Black Hills leaves them that way; and I believe provides Cabela's with that ammo......

What I'm getting at is how would they get a primer in without removing enough of the Lake City crimp to do so? Unless they recrimped it seems like after you popped their primer out you could put one in the same way they did. Maybe I'm missing something.

I never thought of that. It would seem for whoever to load it again (cabelas w/the V-Max) that the crimp would have to be removed. Unless it is a case of them buying primed cases from Lake City to load.
Is it possible to visually see if it is a crimped primer??

I don't have any to examine, all the mil-spec stuff I've got is match 308 which doesn't have crimped pockets anyway.

Yes, the crimp is easily discernable.
Black Hills (the stuff I have used) uses unprocessed LC brass, so the primer IS crimped and the brass is new, to my knowledge.
Ultramax is usually fully processed and fired, and the crimps are removed.
Fed LE loads are also crimped, even with the FED headstamp or LC Tatical Nickle cases and they are new cases....

So far as I know, the crimp is put on after it is primed, not before.

I've shot a fair number of blue box Blackhill's 223s, the one's that are reloaded from military brass, and none ever had a crimped primer when I resized them.
I have broken primer decapping pins on military stuff. Now I just buy commercial brass and call it good.

Yes, meaning BH uses new LC brass in some of the loads I've used; they have been loading for the military; a war is going on..
Unprocessed means new, with the crimp. Processed meaning fired and the crimp has been swaged out and reloaded.
Yes, the primer is put in B4 the crimp.....

I put a counter sink into my drill press and then just hold the case up to the counter sink. It only takes a few seconds to ream the crimp out. I have about 3000 Lake City cases sized, cut to length, tumbled, deprimed, crimp removed and reloaded in my basement. It's an extra step but the brass is good brass if you are willing to do the work. I do break an occasional pin but it's worth it. kwg

I stand corrected. I trashed a depriming pin last night on a .223 with a crimped primer. It was the first time in several thousand crimped cases.
