I just aquired a Savage 99M and was wondering if anybody could give some info on when it was made and approximate value. Its in .308, and has a barrel band that the rear sight is dovetailed into. The lever is case hardened, and it has an aluminum butt plate with a Savage emblem on it. It has cut checkering and a tang mounted safety. The stock is in perfect shape, and is a very nice looking piece of wood. There is a small "U" stamped into the receiver under the stamping that says Model 99M. Serial # is 10698**. It also has the counter in the receiver. Any help would be appreciated.

Edited - go with Mike's answer.

If you look in front of the lever you should find one or two numbers followed by a character, all of them inside an oval. This is an assembly stamp (aka LBC -- Lever Boss Code). Savage started stamping rifles with then in 1949 and started with a letter A, and bumped the letter every year. They skipped O and Q. So take a look at that if you can read it, and count forward from 1949.

I have one, made about the same time and it is a shooting son of a gun. In fact it is my best shooting 99! My .284 shoots almost as good.

It sounds like a parts gun to me...The DL or M that I have seen did not have the metal butt plate with the Indian head on it. and I am miffed as to the "barrel band with a rear sight dovetail cut into it", that ain't right or am I misreading something here. Also if its a DL or M that should be stamped on the left side of the receiver at the front of the action above the barrel threads (outside front of chamber or left side) The tang safty is correct and should be gold as is the trigger as best I recall.

I believe he meant to say barrel boss, not barrel band!
