Dennis,
You write as well or better than the noted gunwriters on this site, so I thought I would search you out on this forum. I knew I couldn't find you on the "Good Guy List" so here I am...
I am headed back up to Ketchikan in November, the 20th-24th to be exact, and we want to find a live wolf to dispatch (or kill if that is more clear) and I was hoping I could count on you for some free advice.
You also told me I could have some venison dinner, but maybe it should be my turn and we could go downtown for some sushi on my nickel.
Anyhow, if you have some ideas I would appreciate whatever you can offer. Reid has the use of a cabin on the airport side and he says that POW has some too, let me know what I need to make it quick and clean.
Thanks, Shrapnel
P.S. You might check out the latest edition of "Handloader" magazine, there is a great article about dispatching (or killing) Angus cows with an original buffalo rifle.

No wolf hunting on POW for sure.
Thinking I've shot more wolves around here than Dennis, but good luck.

And if there should be a fair amount of snow down low when you get here I would just walk a poodle around Ward lake for awhile. Though I'm not certain on baiting rules....

Steelhead,
Thanks for any help, I met Dennis when I was there last fall, bought a raft from him to go Grizzly hunting.
Is Ward lake over by Traiter's cove? We hunted black bear there this past spring.
I may bring a poodle with me, how do wolves like cats?

Ward lake is Ketchikan proper.
Wolves are a crap shoot at best. I pretty much live in the remote stuff most of the time (I'm 25 miles from Ketchikan) and I've gone over a year without ever seeing a wolf.
I've been outdoors at least 8 hours a day for the past week and haven't seen one. If you have snow you can run the beaches and/or blow a deer call, but I'd rather watch paint dry than 'wait' on a wolf.
Trapping season is open here for them at that time, much better luck.
