For the first time in 16 yrs it looks like I'm a meat hunter. M We'll see if I'll beable to shoot a dink or not tommorow. Still think it will at least need to be a forked horn buck. I'm thinking maybe I'm just kill happy right now as I need to make up for a piss poor shot on a trophy mulie a month ago. Just thinking out loud.

I have 'dinks' that are better trophies than some bigger deer because of the hunt.
Always figured enjoyment was first.

My best "trophy" is a jack rabbit I took from 206 long steps with my .454. I aimed about one jack above center and squeezed the trigger. I got a severe case of buck feaver when I saw the hit.
I didn't eat it, though.

If your blood gets to pumpin after the shot, dont worry about it... If it doesnt get pumpin, well you need to sell all your 'hunting' guns, and stick to target shooting. I have killed coues from a 3 inch spike, to a 93 inch buck, including a about 50" 3x2 in Mexico.. I wouldnt trade any of them for the world as all of the raised my blood pressure and heart rate!

Been times I had to drag two deer at a time out of the mountain, not "two fers", just savvy meat hunting...
A couple or three times with the bow, and a bunch with the rifle.
Seem to remember those hunts more distinctly than anything else over the past few decades.
Though, that one time with a handgun, in an opening day first snow winter wonderland, and tracking that buck to his bed was pretty damn cool......

Meat hunting happiness is deciding on which blood trail to follow first.
A man could have far worse things to deal with....

We have about 10 packages of meat left in the freezer. Coincidentally the season opens in a week. 5 deer went into the deep freeze last fall and my family was well fed. 3 others made there way to other families and they were grateful.
Funny thing is, they are all trophies to me. YMMV.

FWIW I have a doe head on the wall. She was the very hardest deer I've ever killed and memorable. Much more so than a buck I stumbled into... I hate shooting a buck just because, I'll shoot does and "cull" bucks while mananging the promising ones because we are fortunate to be able to do that. It also means I haven't shot a "buck" since 2003.... No big deal to me. My freezer is not empty each year though... And I always have a super hunting season.

My wall hanger, near Booner, is far from my favorite hunting memory. I've had far more exiting hunts for does.

Careful, Scott. On another forum I mentioned hunting for enjoyment and the fun of watching incidental animals with my binoculars. Got jumped instantly. Binoculars are not for fun but a serious tool. Hunting is not for enjoyment but is serious, etc. Still makes me smile to recall. I didn't respond, and was surprised that the only replies were down on fun.
So if you enjoy hunting, don't admit it!

man, my favorite hunt ever was one where i never even shot my gun. i hadnt seen any deer the whole time we were out, and when i looked at my watch, i saw it was time to head back to camp to pack up, and was almost there when about 13 bucks ran in front of me. all but 3 of them were spikes. 2 were forked, and one was huge. he ran up on top of the hill, and stopped offering me a perfect heart shot. i aimed, then looked up the hill. i saw skyline, and lowered my rifle. he was on top, and my friends and family were on the other side of that canyon. i swore loudly enough to make the deer run, but i have never forgotten that trip. i still shake when i think about having to lower my gun.
