I'm getting married next month. My fiance and I both have pickups. Both are older but in good shape and paid for.

Mine: '91 Chev 2500, 4x4, standard cab, 147K, good strong truck

hers: '98 Dakota, 2 door club cab, 108K, V8 (I don't know which one)

Hers is newer and much lower mileage. Mine is larger and will handle my camp trailer & atv much better. Considering the age & mileage, both are in about equal condition.

One of them has to go, but which one? We're not in a position right now to sell both and buy a new one. Maybe in a couple years.

Just my .02 but I would suggest dump them both and get a 7.3 Powerstroke or something both of you can agree on. That way neither one of you has any bad feelings about who won the power struggle over what truck you kept when you first got married.

No power stuggle. We both want to keep the best one. I wish the Chev had a lot less miles on it. Then there would be no question.

the Chev has the 700R4 tranny. They tend to fail at about 125K. Mine did and was rebuild last year. So at least that part's been taken care of.

You didn't say what engine the Chevy has in it- so i'm gonna guess it is the 350. If so I would keep the Chevy- more useable truck for what you need. Plus, the Dodge is probably worth a little more so if you sell it you would have a little more in your pocket or for repairs for the Chevy. If the Chevy has the 454 I would dump it and keep the Dodge- regardless of which V8 is in the Dodge. Just my .02

350. The decision has been made to keep the Chev. My fiance mentioned getting some horses. That means a horse trailer. End of discussion on which truck we keep. No way on earth could that Dakota handle a 2 horse trailer safely.
The Chev is high mileage so we're going to get her a car and just use the truck for hauling, etc. It won't get 5K a year on it so it should last a long time yet. I need to shelter it somehow, though, so the sun won't rot the tires, dash & fabric.

I'd keep them both rather than take the beating you will on the Dodge. List it at your price, but if I didn't get what I wanted.....

I have a built in sales yard. I live on a major highway. I park ANYTHING out by the highway with a sign on it. It'll sell. You wouldn't believe the junk I've sold that way. I even sold a 20+ yo Suburban with a crunched side, 180K, badly leaking tranny & engine, and rotted upholstery. Got $1000 for that one.

If there's one thing & one thing only that ford & chevy guys can agree on it's this. The dodge has got to go.

But I really dig the advice daveyreka gave... (7.3)

Not to be rude (its none of my business) ... but I don't understand, if both are paid for why do HAVE to sell one? Why not keep both??? Is there a rule I don't know about that says one p/u per family (I'm pretty sure its not an Idaho state law!)?

We need the money to get her a car, something that'll get a lot better than 17 mpg.
