I am looking for Whipcord wool pants. The only brands I can find are the Filsons for $180 and the Cabelas for $79.
At this point in my life, I am pretty broke.
I hike in the off season, and was hoping to find some non-camo, non-cotton pants to travel in. Without a tag in my pocket for this season, I will be hiking and predator calling in New Mexico. A ramble in general.
Asking if I am missing some good deals elsewhere? Are the Cabelas pants fairly decent. I think they are promoting a 60 day trial.
I use Microtex as well, and just bought another pair, but I am trying to shy away from camo at times.
Any tips ? And please, I am sure a Filson garment is good, but I just don't see it. Never owned anything Filson, and with their prices, regardless if it's made in the USA, I doubt I ever will.

I'm real fond of the Sporthill pants, which you can get on sale occasionally at REI, or their outlet.
Check out reioutlet.com and sierratradingpost.com
If you're patient, I think you'll find something you like.

Jess, I've got the Filson Whips and also had a pair of the Cabelas Whips... I sent the Cabelas back cause they hemmed them 2" too long (how does someone do that?)... they're Chinese made but quite nice for the money.
Like Filson, the Cabelas Whips run small in the waist so order up!

The best deal going on wool pants are the swedish army grey wool pants. They have a kind of built in gator and hold up really well. I have the columbia and the woolrich wool pants as well. But the swedish ones should cost you about $20.

JJ, I'm an absolute Filson KoolAid drinker----------I own about 1/3 of an older catalog (pre-Lodge Collection). That said, I bought a pair of Cabelas Whipcords a few years ago just to test the concept for $100 less than the Filsons would cost. I've worn them everywhere and love 'em. They're made in India or somewhere, and comparing the finish detail to Filson, they come in second place. But for less than half the money they're a very good bargain. If you KNOW you'll love wool whipcord pants as much as those of us who use them, I'd opt for Filson from the get-go and just be happy. If finances are a little tight though, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Cabelas knock-offs.
With either brand, I'd order them a full size larger than your normal everyday pants. It allows more freedom of movement in blow-down country, and the ability to wear different weight long handles if you want. As an aside, you can also wash them in Nikwax and they'll repel water quite well.
The only damage mine has suffered so far was from a clumsy attempt at crossing a barbed wire fence. The only criticism I've heard while wearing them is that I look like I'm wearing dress pants---------far from the worst insult I've ever been given!

Check ebay. I was able to score some Orvis washable wool whipcords for $30. Normally they're about $130. Nice pants, almost too nice to wear hunting.

I have a pair of the Cabelas whipcords and I like them. I got them on a bargain cave sale and I'm very pleased with them.

Though I haven't been successful in the endeavor, I've heard of folks finding good wool dress pants at thrift stores at ridiculous prices.
I hear you on the camo for certain times/places. I would LOVE to be able to get some Microtex in non-camo colors and even in a loose fit jeans style pant. They'd be about all I'd own...

Several weeks ago I purchased a pair of Filson Whipcords at Shedhorn Sports in Ennis Montana. They had two sizes 34 and 38 and I wear a 34 or 35 depending upon the manufacture. I could barely get the 34's on and the 38's are snug, snugger than my 34 Patagonia Stand Up Shorts. I also noticed that the general tayloring was a bit different, the butt is big. Filson originally was made for the Alaskan Gold Rush and I do not think that they have changed pattern makers since then.
The quality is excellent and I have to get them to a seamdress in the next few days. It is snowing hard here in Bozeman and to bad that elk season does not open for two more weeks. With 50 inches of snow forecast for the mountains it is going to be an outstanding season with my new whipcords keeping me warm.

Check out the German or Swiss army pants at a nearby surplus store. I've bought enough to last the rest of my life. About $20-$40 per pair. I love the huge pockets.

I second the West German surplus wool pants.
The have cargo pockets, waterproof knees and generous leg openings. The also cost $30 hemmed to your length.
