Looking to kill a buffalo. I've heard of a few ranches in North and South Dakota who offer this, but apparently a fence is at play. Any freerange opportunities out in them parts, even Mt? I've heard of the natives offering such on their huge reservations, but google came up empty. Then again maybe this doesnt even exist.

The animal itself creates a problem.
They are embarrisingly unaware to the point that even though I wanted mine for many years and enjoyed the experience in a what was then, a foreign land, I felt guilty as sin after the shot when the animal fell and I noted that the others stood around as if nothing happened.
It is easy to see why they were wiped out in mnay areas.
My point is that you do not need game fences to hold them in. I took mine on a SD ranch of 62,000 acres with fences on one side of the road and none on the other. The fences I am referring to are basic 3 or 4 wire cattle fences, which these animals could shurely walk through, but tend to be "steered" to stay within a designated pasture.
I'd take one for meat or a nice looking trophy hide or mount but I would not claim hunting skill as a requirement compared to the 100% free range background I came from.
If you want one, take it and enjoy the experience. They cannot help being what they are, the "Lord of the Plaines" with few challenges or threats from the other indigenous species they evolved with.

Sounds like yours was more freerange than a canned type. Who'd ya go through and what'd it run ya? Was this through the natives on a rez?
I'd prefer a freerange hunt (or at least as close as one can get) with a young, good eating buff. I'm not looking for a $5,000 breeder bull that's to tough to eat.

Phil Shoemaker has a write up of his Buffalo hunt in Nebraska in Successful Hunter a few years back. From what he wrote it sounded like anything but a "canned" hunt. Likely varies a bit by state and by outfitter.

The only true free range buffalo hunt in the lower 48 is in the Henry Mountains of Utah, and it is a very hard tag to draw. But in talking to two people who have done it, those animals are completely unlike the placid bovine steamrollers that one typically sees in parks and ranches.

I'm sure it was an interesting write up from Phil.
Ideal hunt would be the Delta buff hunt in Alaska, but that tag is basicaly UN-drawable, at least for me. IIRC, less than 1% odds.
For what it's worth, I am not looking to limit myself to just the Dakotas. Anywhere west will work.

look up Blue Mountain Bison in CO. I've not been there but have read about it. It definitely does not sound canned.

379,
I shot mine on the Triple U Ranch in Pierre, SD (I'm sure this is the place tbear was talking about as well). I'm pretty sure that "Atkinson" here at the Campfire books for them, or you can view their website here. The hunt can be tailored to the way you want it and can range from shooting them with a high power off the hood of a pick-up to stalking in close with a black powder rig. Just let the folks at the ranch know your wishes before the hunt. I did the trophy bull hunt and that price includes the skull and robe. I purchased some meat to take with me and it was very good. I'd like to go back some day for a meat only hunt.
Mike

Its been about 15 years since I did this hunt & you are correct I used the wrong letter. When I hunted there Table Mountain Outfitters ran the hunts. One of my SCI buddies hunted, I believe in Wyoming or Arizona, by horseback & stayed in teepee's. He used a replica Sharps & the hunt was written up in several hunting magazines years ago. This hunt took several days & it may have even been on an Indian Reservation. There are some very interesting bison hunts to be had. I also did some sightseeing in SD & took pictures where the Louis & Clark expedition traveled.

You were on the right track tbear. Lots of bison and Triple 7, some of Dances with Wolves shot there and as of 10 years ago there were still some movie building props on the location.
I got to spend two summers working on the ranch getting payed to trap and shoot prairie dogs. Awesome job while going to college.
