I read the article and would like him to build me a rifle in 6.5-06. I went to E.R Shaw's website and saw no mention of building complete rifles. Could you enlighten me.
Thanks, Kevin

The only information that I could find was in the downloadable .pdf of the services/products they offer. Hopefully they'll get the website updated to reflect this new offering soon.

Websites definitely have two edges for marketing. Yes, they can be changed and updated easily; and yes, it is very obvious when they are not. People not used to the Internet seem not to comprehend that lesson.

If you decide to go with an E.R. Sahw MK-VII, I hope that you have better luck getting information out of E.R. Shaw then I did. About 2 months ago, I emailed E.R. Shaw and dialoged with "Chris". It seems to me, BWDIK?, that when you are ordering a custom rifle, or FTM a custom "anything", a menu of options would be a useful thing to have. Unfortunately, E.R. Shaw doesn't have a menu, as (according to Chris) "there are too many options". Here are my key "take-aways" from my dialog with Chris:
1. There are too many options to list, so tell us what you want and we'll tell you if we can or can't help you. 2. You must prepay 100%. 3. You can expect to wait between 5 and 7 months from order to delivery. 4. The MK-VII may be a good value for the $$, but it seems to me that they are making the ordering process far too complicated and difficult than it needs to be.
As with many things, YMMV, but I'm spending my $$ elsewhere.
08/17/08 "I read Stan Trzoniec's article about the E.R. Shaw Rifle in Handloader #254, but I couldn't find any information on it on your site. Can you direct me? Jeff in Omaha"
08/17/08 "Good morning Due to the multiple options that the Mark VII is possible to have it built in there is nothing listed as of yet on the web site. The Mark VII is offered in both RH and LH options, 4 different barrel contours (the 2.5, 3, 3.5, & the #5), 416 s/s or 4140 chrome moly, or a combo of both, 3 different stocks (depending on bbl contour), or as a barreled/action and in over 80 different caliber's. If you could give me an idea as to what yourlooking for I can give you a cost. The time frame to build a Mark VII for you is approx. 5 to 7 months. Thanks for asking Chris"
08/17/08 Chris, How about a short action RH, 2.5 contour barrel, 416 s/s, in 25-284? I don't understand how you could have "a combo of both" s/s and cm barrel, please explain. Jeff in Omaha"
08/17/08 "Good afternoon Are you looking for a complete rifle, $635.00 and up or just a bbl/action, $595.00 and up? The turnaround time to manufacture a Mark VII for a customer is approx. 5 to 7 maonths and since it is being built to your spec.'s, based on what we offer, they are billed up fornt before production begins Thanks again Chris"

How can they build a semi-custom rifle for $635? I understand they have an inventory of parts that they draw from, so while they say there are multiple options, there are still a finite number of options based on the options they have chosen (i.e., it is semi-custom and not a completely custom-built rifle). However, don't rebarreling jobs typically cost $400+ (cost of the barrel + cost of labor), and aren't they essentially doing a rebarreling job + adding the cost of the action and stock (and the federal excise tax they have to pay for manufacturing a gun rather than just rebarreling one)? They may view this as a great way to sell more of their barrels, but the economics seem challenging.
If they can truly sell a good quality semi-custom starting at $635, then they will present a real challenge to the traditional large gunmakers. I will have to reread the articles about their semi-custom guns, because I'm wondering what kind/quality of stock they are using at that base price (I'm guessing a tupperware stock like we can buy from Midway for somewhat less than $100).

OK. I had not read Trzoniec's article. Here is what he wrote about the stocks:
quote-------- Shaw completes the rifle with a laminated stock from Boyds’ Gunstock Industries. Laminated in a gray, black and brown combination, it is profiled in the JRS Classic pattern complete with a cheekpiece and rubber buttpad. There is no exterior magazine release or floorplate, which adds to the streamlined appearance of the rifle. To keep the rifle in a worklike appearance, the stock is coated with Boyds’ own satin finish that is virtually waterproof and durable for the rigors of outdoor use. ---------------------
I'm surprised that they are spending the money to use a laminated stock, but that should help the accuracy of the guns (and thus their reputations). However, the precision of 3-shot groups from the .22-250 AI that Trzoniec tested is not quite up to the level of what I would expect from a 10-lb varmint gun in calm (no wind) conditions. I might still have to get one in something like a 6.5-06 for which MOA 3-shot groups would be acceptable.

AM I correct that these are Savage Actions with the "nut" on the barrel?

They are Savage actions without the barrel nut.
