Last year my then 12 year old daughter told me she wanted to hunt with me. Needless to say, I was THRILLED! We had an opportunity to hunt antelope last year, but unfortunately, we were only able to do so for a day. She had a shot at one at 375 yards plus, but was unsuccesful. That's the way that day ended. I've been waiting a year to hunt with her again and help her harvest her first animal....
One year later here we are. My daughter just turned 14 and had a youth buck antelope tag in hand. She's practiced a bit with a Cooper Model 52 in a 25-06 and a Cooper .223 to get ready (she's quite the shooter). To make this hunt even better, my dad decided to come out from Arizona and be a part of his granddaughter's buck hunt. That officially made this a 3 generation hunt. The icing on the cake was my 10 year old daughter decided she wanted to go along too. She is not happy she has to wait two more seasons to hunt with me (neither am I). Considering I have two daughters, and no sons, I am thrilled they want to do this with me.
We just returned from our three day hunt today and we could not be happier. The weather cooperated (it was supposed to be nasty), we had plenty of animals to choose from, we taught the girls how to spot and stalk, and we had success across the board. We put a challenging spot on a group and the wind was howling. We couldn't get any closer than 337 yards without being busted. We had a hefty wind from our side. She wanted to take the shot and set-up on her shooting sticks. Her first shot was in perfect vital alignment, but a bit low. It hit the lower part of his chest. A slow walk up the hill and a perfectly placed second shot at 120 yards finished the job. Considering the distance and wind, I am very proud of her shots!
My youngest, wanting to be a part of the day, really wanted "her own" hide, so I went and bought an over the counter doe tag. My dad and I were hell-bent on getting her that hide. So we returned the next day (today) and you can see the outcome (I shot the doe).
Sorry for the long-winded story but it was a very cool last few days.
Shot with Cooper Model 52 in a 25-06 and 115 grain partitions.
