I tried some made by Gunk. Might as well have used mineral spirits. Very mild, slow evaporation, didn't remove dried crud or gummed up oil/grease.

Should I expect better? What do you use?

Thanks,

Bruce

I use Cyclo brand Brake & Parts Clean, stock number C-32. It doesn't seem to be as hard on plastic as some of the other ones are. I've cleaned up a bunch of mil-surps with it and been very satisfied.

Sweets 7.62 has works great for me followed up by Brakleen to remove all residue. For tough stuff, a brass soaked J-B compound sees to do the job completely. I have been told to substitute Crab clearer as it leaves a corrosive residue behind.

Brake cleaner is good to remove all oil to get a part dry, carb cleaner in a spray can will desolve crud from a part,

If you have a lot of parts to clean buy the carb cleaner in a bucket at a auto parts store and soak them in it. DO NOT put aluminum in as it will desolve it to nothing it is differant than the spray can type that CAN be used on aluminum.

I was told most of the gun guys down here use GM's brake cleaner.

I'm guessing you meant CARB CLEANER.

Crab cleaner always pits the bore and makes the rifle smell like a cat house.

I buy Brakleen by the case. I use it for everything. Do NOT buy the Wal-Mart brand as it is more like carb cleaner than brake cleaner and WILL damage your finish. I have had it dissolve plastic parts on equipment.

GM top engine cleaner is very good at removing crud but more expensive. I get it at the local Chevy dealer when i need it. I don't think you can buy a chlorinated hydrocarbon product in a consumer outlet anymore.

I still have a 5-gallon bucket of 1,1,1 Trichlorethane and use squeeze bottles to dispense it.

I've used Choke & CArb cleaner for years with no problems. Make a point of avoiding contact with wood and always re-oil after cleaning. Works great.

I'll wait until Action Auto or one of the other auto parts store has the stuff on sale and buy bulk

+1 on the oil!!!!!!

I know people who use GM Top Engine Cleaner for a bore solvent, but GM has changed their formula. Not sure if the new stuff is as effective.

Just use the Break-Free foaming bore cleaner for the bore, and the Blue Wonder gun cleaner on the rest. Both clean as well as anything on the market, they're bio-degradable, and won't stink up the house for days on end after you use them.

Yeh, but with a $2 can of Brakleen you can blast crap away outside until everything is off. Especially nice on getting the crud out of rimfires and stuff.

I use brake cleaner on bore brushes. It gets the gunk out so there's no chemical residue eating them or fouling that will go back into a barrel.

Gunk brand will leave a film behind without drying everything out but it will also cause problems if you are trying to degrease before applying a spray on finish.

I get my brake cleaner from Napa auto parts as a store brand for about $1 a can on sale. As Dennis mentioned its great on rimfire crud, I just hose out my 10-22 every thousand rounds and then just squirt some lube back in.

Thanks for the tip on the 10/22. I'll try it.

Crab cleaner wasn't cutting it. I think its the pieces of cracked shell that cause the trouble.

Make that a +2. I clean the bore with BrakeKleen and a brush when it's really fouled.
