I've been thinking of trying one and wondered if anyone had done it yet? I was looking for .308 Win accuracy plus a little more velocity. I dont know if that is possible but it's worth a try. A buddy of mine talked me out of my .308, primarily because I haven't shot it much recently, and turned around and shot two screemer groups with it yesterday . So I guess I need another super accurate rifle to replace it.

I'd be for guessing that if you want a bit more speed, I'd just go for a 06 and be done with it. It is no problem to build a super accurate 06.

Just a thought.

Have a great day!

I would go WSM or Shamu instead of the WSSM. Simple because they have proven them selves already. Personally I have no interest in the WSSM case. As mentioned before the '06 can be built to shoot as well. Pick your poison

I did an article on the .223 WSSM. The case capacity was the same as the .308. I'm guessing that you'd end up with a cute .308 case with .308 performance.

The only problem I can see is the necking-up. The biggest WSSM is the .25 and running up 5 calibers might build-in some neck eccentricity and stesses. The neck is VERY heavy - 21 thou, if memory serves - which is weird.

Anyway, good luck, if you do it. Actually, there isn't anything wrong with the standard .308 Winchester. Superb cases and lots of brand choices. Personally, I'd go for the standard version.

I would only go to the trouble of making a 30 WSSM if I were going to build a rifle on an AR-15 platform. Otherwise, you're going to a lot of trouble in a bolt gun to only end up with .308 Win performance.

It doesn't matter what kind of rifle you build, the cartridge is still going to perform much like a .308Win...without the usual benefits of brass, factory match ammo, known load data/performance, reloading dies, and resale value.

By AR15 platform, I assume you mean AR10? There might be a feeding issue...but I guess a 'smith that would tackle the job would know how to fix that...

Whole thing sounds expensive unless you have a special need for it.

No. I'm talking about an AR-15 lower (not AR-10) with a 25 WSSM upper. Olympic Arms sells them. I'm having one built now by Dedicated Technology in Minnesota. Converted 20-rd mag holds 8 rounds, I believe.

Should be the cat's ass. 100 Grain XLC's loaded to 2.260" COL at .25-06-ish velocities out of an AR!

If you are looking for a cartridge which falls midway between the 308 and 06 in performance and which provides 308 accuacy it has been around for quite a while in the form of the 75x55 Swiss. The 7.62x54R Russian is just about the same thing only with a rim. Brass for both is available from Norma and Lapua. The Swiss is the more practical of the two since it is rimless.
A wildcat which works out fairly well is the 7.62x55. This is simply a 308 run in another 4mm. 6,5x55 is the parent brass. Easy to form. Use 308 dies with a spacer and there you have it. GD.

Olympic advertised there AR-15's in 7m/m and .30WSSM a while back. I would be real interested in one of these on a 15 platform. When I Emailed Olympic (3 times!) the reply I got was so genaric it was useless! I asked if they had uppers ready to ship, if they had the correct bolts for them, and if they had dies and ballistic information on these two wildcats. What I got from them was: Yes it will work on a standard AR-15! Three times I Emailed them these questions and three times they sent me the exact same worthless answer.

I got sketchy info from OlyArms as well. I pm'd you with Dedicated Technology's email. If anybody knows about the 7mm and .30 WSSM, Mike will.
