Removing Savage 110 Barrel Nut

I read McPherson's "Accurizing the Factory Rifle" and followed his procedure for removing a Savage 110 barrel nut. I purchased a barrel vise, and am using a hex wrench with 3/32 brass pins as specified in McPherson's book. After really tightening the barrel clamping fixture nuts to squeeze the oak blocks against the barrel, I got the barrel to stop turning in the oak blocks. But I can't break the barrel nut loose. I'm going to try penetrating oil next. If that doesn't work I will try a propane torch to heat the barrel nut. I've read postings that say to heat sink the receiver and barrel. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to heat sink the receiver and barrel? Also any other suggestions on how to loosen the barrel nut, that I am not aware of.

Thanks for the three pieces of advise. Yes I will try SavageShooters. I tried a gunsmith on Saturday but he was closed and is closed today. Didn't want to spend the $40 for a Savage nut wrench. I'm using a 1 1/4" box end wrench and 4 3/32" brass pins as McPherson describes on page 26 of his book. I went back and read over (it's been 2 years since I've read the book) page 31. He suggests penetrating oil, which I applied today. I'm going to hammer on the nut with a hard-plastic nylon mallet as he suggests, and I've ordered rosin from Brownells to put on the oak blocks to keep the barrel from moving in the blocks. He also recommends heating with ONLY a hair dryer, and placing cold wet cloths on the receiver and barrel to cause a heat differential. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

The four brass pins dosen't work as well as the savage barrel wrench. the round pins being loose will squeeze the nut to the barrel making it tighter and put an un even pressure on the nut. buy a wrench .or pay a smith. I have never had one I coulden't get off with the proper wrench. make shift things do not always work. gun part's has them for less than $40.00. the last time checked.

get a savage barrel wrench and also a sharp tap with a hammer on the handle of the wrench works wonders. I have the barrel blocks and used the resin pack that came with them to hold the barrel. tom

no problem. when I rebarreled my 110 the sharp blow from the hammer did the trick to break the nut loose. I got a headspacing guage to adjust the head space as well. tom
