I'm looking for suggestions for loading 350 grain cast bullets probably with either unique or red dot powder. I'm looking for the mildest safe load that would still be accurate out to 50 yards or so.
Thanks,
John

It's pretty hard to conjure up a vision of plinking with a .45-70

I used to use sime grossly over sized 255 grain Lyman bullets with 13 grains of Unique. I tamped a 1.5 inch square of Kleenex ontop of the powder using a well polished piece of brass rod. When I could find the rod I used a piece of 3/8th wooden dowel well polished. The Kleenex burns up real fast with the powder.

Nah, I have a load for my 35 Whelen with a 280 gr cast bullet that isn't as loud as a .22 magnum. Great fun

I like 5744 for factory ballistics in the 45-70 , it gives better accuracy for me than unique or 2400. 25 grs with 500 gr bullets provide me with real tight groups at 50 yds.

I use 300 grain cast bullets for plinking in the 45-70. I use Univeral Clays (very close to Unique) and my load is 11 grains of Universal Clays using a Magnum primer. ( I find the magnum primer more accurate ).

This is subsonic and I get 3/4 inch off the sand bag and 50 yards with my 1895 GS. These make great plinking loads. Easy on the wallet, easy on the ears, and very easy on the shoulder. I have used ti for squirel and it did a great job on the three that I took with it. I am temped to use it for fall turkey maybe.

Have fun and be safe.
