I am asking the gun writers if they know where Ross Seyfried is? Is he writing for anyone presently? What is he up to?
Thanks!

Run a search on Ross, his moves and why he took them are well hashed over here.

I hate to bring the Ross thing up again, but i read two articles yesterday. 1. Why Africa? by Ron Spomer in successful Hunter. It was well written and informative. 2. Dark Continent by Ross. The second made me feel like I was there. I found Ross kind of hard to take but pretty talented.

He's probably out trying to break in a piece of water pipe or writing an article telling someone else how to. I can't believe I spent good money to read his dreamed up crap.

A Wolfe Publishing Company rep told me Ross was "pursuing other interests". I had just reviewed my subscriptions to Rifle & Handloader mags partly because of Seyfried's writings.
He certainly can write. He certainly is uniquely knowledgable. He certainly is full of himself. But...that seems to be in the personality of champions. I have known several world champion athletes who are pretty much the same way.
Somebody once said, "It isn't cockiness or brag if you can do what you say you're gonna do."
As for Seyfried's apparent financial success, there's another old saying, "Don't try to count what's in a fellow's pocket. You don't know who put it there."

I found this forum looking specifically for info about Ross Seyfried, since I've not seen articles, etc. of his for some time. My main line of interest into which he delves is black powder arms, both breech and muzzle loading. His work on the subject has always been very informative and entertaining. For those looking for performance from this era of technology, stop hoping for some new commercial "breakthrough", or searching for something missed in research of 19th century Hawken or buffalo rifles. Look instead to the design and methodology employed by the purveyors and consumers of 19th century British sporting rifles... these intrepid gentlemen were using such weapons to hunt game from rook to elephant, from stalking rifle range to several hundred yards. Ross has published much valuable material on this topic, and others. (Note to MartinBNS: If you really want to see 'BS' in this area of discussion, check out the frequently pointless pap from Sam Fadala or much more so that of Doc Carlson... Talk about amateur hour!)

Welcome to the Campfire Hammerspur. I found this site the same way that you did, and am very glad it happened. IMO it's the best outdoor site on the web.

He's found in some of the NRA publications and as has been mentioned, Double Gun Journal.

Not as a representative of the 'campfire but just as a member I invited him to join us here. His answer was a polite but also a curt, "I do not participate in internet forums......much said, little foundation".

Seyfried was bad enough. I do not read any of the rags any more. Not enough knowledge, substance, or experience to share with an old goat like me. I either know what they're writing allready ..............or I know that it's horse sh*t. My BS meter has a hair trigger
I don't wish harm to ole ross, hope he finds a good job, maybe writing cooking or sewing or basket weaving articles etc..

George--I don't know you from squat, but Seyfried's resume is pretty much public record. You can dislike his writing, or his personality, or his haircut, but what he's done is fact, not BS.

I like Ross's writing, it kind of reminds me of Elmer. The truth is that I have a great deal of respect for most of the guys that still continue to work hard to get their work published. The internet must be a huge threat. I'd rather read a medicore article on rifles or hunting or whatever than I had the best "serious" news article ever published in a paper.

Gun writers are a pretty good lot.

SharpsShooter---I like Seyfried's writing, and I share his interest in single shots and double rifles, particularly those of British origin. Nobody else writing today has his depth and breadth of knowledge on the subject, IMHO. There are very few people in his league in the cast bullet arena, either for handguns or rifles. He has wide hunting experience in Africa and here. He can describe the aesthetic of hunting with classic pieces better than anyone else I've read. He is an accomplished sporting clays shooter.
He won the 1978 U.S. National Championship in practical pistol and was a member of the second placed National team in the 1979 Championship. He won the 1981 IPSC World Champion using surprisingly stock type equipment, a Colt .45 prepared by Pachmayr with very few bells and whistles -- an accuracy and trigger job combined with a good set of iron sights. A far cry from today's race guns. The US team, led by him also won that year.
In real world experience and expertise, he is at the top of his profession. He is apparently not a real warm and fuzzy guy, and the only time I've ever spoken to him (about his hunts at his Elk Song ranch), he was polite and correct but not warm or chatty. That's fine---I've got friends if I want to chat.
But one thing he does not bring is BS.

fwiw,
I very much miss his writing... My first copy of Rifle was the Fall 1999 Hunting Annual. In short his article "Bear Oddysey" just impressed the hell out of me. I later went on to subscribe to both Rifle and Handloader and did so until he left... I have nothing against the current writers and often find Barsness's work interesting. Phil Shoemaker's work speaks for itself. Still it was Ross Seyfried who brought me to the publication...

Regards, Matt.

Ross still writes, check out DGJ.

I think he was sighted in a Wal-Mart in La Grande, Oregon at 6:30 on last Thursday. (Just kidding: But his ranch is just outside of La Grande, I shot my first Elk near there. I am not real sure La Grande has a Wal-mart either.)

Speaking of Wolfe's Hunting Annual, I loved that publication and really looked forward to it each year. The articles were usually of extremely high quality. The 6 issues of Successful Hunter I USED to receive did not replace it in terms of quality. I wish Wolfe would cut sling on Successful Hunter and bring back the Hunting annual. This is just more proof that quantity is no replacement for quality. And while I'm at it, if Mike Venturino does another recycle of his 10 year old black powder silhouette and cowboy action shooting articles, I'm going to scream.

Ain't it the truth about Venturino! I think he's ridden (or would it be written?) the 44/40 into the ground and it's mostly the same old stuff.

I miss Ross' articles a lot. The DGJ is unfortunately a bit rich for my blood.

I enjoy the uniqueness of his articles and have talked to him on the phone a number of times. I have always found him as no BS and extremely knowledgeable. He has always been friendly to me and invited me to stop by on more than one occasion.

Maybe those who find him boring are reading about things that are over there head and comprehension level?

I have a BS meter and a Bag of Wind Meter. Both are going off with ole Geo.

If you want to know why knowledgable people don't read or respond to Forums re read this thread.
