What year did remington start stamping "stainless steel" on the 264 win mags. I found a real nice 62 production 700 adl in a 264. The barrel is not stamped stainless steel, I did read that the ones made in 62 weren't stamped. All the ones I seen on the Internet have stainless steel stamped on them... The sn was 17xxx

Here are a couple points from "The Remington Model 700" by John Lacy:

1-"In 1961 the Model 721 was chambered for the 264 WIN MAG with a stainless steel barrel. The practice was continued in 1962 when the 700 was introduced. The small bore magnums were equipped with stainless steel barrels through the 1970 model year. This included the 264 WIN MAG, the 7MM REM MAG, and the 300 WIN MAG. These barrels were plated with copper and then with iron so they would take a blue finish..... The earliest of these were not marked in any outward way that indicated they were stainless steel.... The 700 barrels, in addition to being unmarked, measured 23 1/2 inches instead of the advertised 24 inches."

2-"In 1963 the barrel for the magnum chamberings previously mentioned was designated as stainless steel with a roll die. The marking appeared on the barrel just under the chambering designation."

3-for a 1962 assembly date it should have a two letter code stamped on the left side of the barrel, just forward of the recoil lug with one of the following letters: BLACKPOWDERX (B for Jan, L for Feb, etc.) followed by a "J" for 1962.

Hope that helps.
