Has anyone re-barreled a Marlin 336 30-30 with a 44 caliber barrel and made a 44 mag rifle?

If not, do you think it could be done? I am thinking of a fast twist to shoot 300+ grain hard cast bullets out of a 18 barrel. Is the Marlin 1894 better for this job or can the 336 be made to work?

Marlin made 336s in 44 mag for a handful of years back in the 60s. They had a strange carrier arrangement using a long cartridge stop and a spring loaded cartridge leveler. Some were great rifles while many were plagued with feeding issues so the were discontinued and the 1894 was debuted. I have rebarreled several 1894s with 1/20" twist barrels for shooting heavy cast bullets. The carriers and timing can also be massaged to allow feeding of longer heavier bullets.

Thanks Thekid.

Looks like I need to get a 1894 to re-barrel. For some reason the 1894 sell for $100 to $150 more than the 336s. Is it as strong as the 336? I started looking at the 336 because I have two 1895s now. Also because of the price difference.

Thanks again,

Richard

Do yourself a favor and go with the 1894.
