Thanks for the advice. I think the slow twist is the way to go to gain full advantage of heavier bullets for less wind drift ect.

Boxer, it seems like all Kimber imports was stopped to South-Africa as there are none available in any cal or configuration. The guys that use to import them only kept classic models as guys tend to buy wood stocked rifles around here. I would love to get my hands on a Montana but do not see it happening soon. If someone around here marketed them correctly Kimbers would probably sell pretty well being such a great rifle to carry around.

If I go the custom slow twist barrel route, would a slim barrel not heat up and lose accuracy when fired repeatedly when culling for instance? I know some of my heavier cals do lose accuracy when barrels heat up, but not sure if the same applies to .22 sized cals?

Thanks

Pieter

m77, your Kudu pic is just killing me to go back to SA for a hunt....;)

I have a remington 22-250 700 Varmint and it shoots scary well- with 40 grain ballistic tips, but with anything heavier it is very average at best. I would love to shoot some high BC bullets in it and my 223 AI, but the 1-12 and 1-14 twists they come in just don't allow it.
Go for the faster twist, 1-8/1-9 , even if it means getting a custom barrel if the Kimbers aren't available and shoot heavier, high BC .22 bullets and you'll always be glad you did. Thank Boxer later....

If you get a good barrel, heating shouldn't be any more problem than using a heavy varmint weight barrel if it is bedded properly, installed properly, and it is digesting loads it likes.

What kind of varmints are you after? I noticed a bunch of Dassies, and tons of birds when I was there. Wish I had a varmint rifle with me then....

Bob

1 turn in 8" is a faster twist than 1 turn in 14".

Are there any legal issues with bringing into your country, a 223 Remington?

There are 2 rules to success:

1. Never tell everything that you know.

Not at all. Although possible, it is quite a process to import rifles privately.

There is something about them smile Spotted a few good bulls over the weekend, hoping that I could hunt one for myself later in the season.

Take a look at the Browning X-bolt Predator. Rifle has a 9 twist and not real heavy for a 26"barrel.

I'd order a bdl sporter. Accurate, dependable, pretty, ergonomic. Maybe get a trigger job by gunsmith or replace with favorite aftermarket. Load 45 gr tax for deer sized animals and 50 gr vmax for varmints out to 400 yards. Scope with your favorite 4-12x40.
