How heavy of a bullet will a 1-12 twist stabilize? How much difference does the length of a TSX make, if any?

Length matters, weight not so much.

That gives me an idea of what I can expect. Thanks.

or a 1 in 7 twist for about anything except the real fragile bullets like the SPSX Hornadys or the Sierra Blitz, or the 50 TNT Speer...

I would only add, the 60 gr Hornady shoots lights out from a couple of 14 inch 22-250's I have owned.

The 60 gr ballistic tip, not so much! I bet it would work well in a 12.

Yep, I'm with Idaho. Can't stabilize the 60 gr Partition in my 14 twist 220. But, I was able to stabilize the new Nosler 64 gr BSB. Now I need some cold weather to see if it'll still stabilize.

If I was to rebarrel the 220, I would definitely go to a faster twist so that I could stabilize the 65 gr Sierra GK and the Partition.

This is one twisty place where I definitely agree with Steelie. His statement above is true, and we both wonder why the hell factory .22-250s are twisted at 1 in 14...

Left over from the days when the longest bullet available was the Sierra 63 gr semi-pointed??????

A ten inch twist might over spin a few of the 40 or 45 gr bullets, and cause the average over the counter purchaser fits. But come on, the year is 2014. What would be the harm of putting a 1 in 12 inch on a factory 22-250?

My factory Salvage tube is a 12 twist, kinda figured that was the norm.

Savage has only recently begun using 12 inch twist barrels on (as far as I know) some of their rifles in 22-250.

12 inch is definitely not the norm for other manufacturers.

In My 1-14" Rem 788 24" 22-250 Boat Tails starts going wrong over .800" At .805" the Flat base Winchester Power Point 64gr gives excellent accuracy. The 55gr Nosler BT at .805" or .810" depending on era it was made is not very stabile. The Speer 70gr Semi pointed at .790 is useable But not as accurate as the 64gr Win PP at the just slightly longer .805" length. Elevation here is 4200' and low humidity is normal. The 52gr HPBT or FBHP might be the perfect weight for accuracy in the 1-14" 22-250. But in the effective range for Big game hunting, I'll stick with the 64gr Win PP

The Ruger American is listed as 1:10" and I believe the Nosler Patriot is 1:9", so the manufacturers may be coming around.

It was misprinted as 1-10" Too good to be true.

Get out the .22 jag and run a tight patch and measure what it actually is

I have a Remington Model 7 in .223 with a 1-12" twist.

I haven't shot any hand loads from it but both the 62-grain Federal and the 64-grain Winchester factory loads stabilize just fine.

Since the 22-250 was designed as a varmint rifle and way back then 50gr. bullets were considered state of the art 1-14 was just fine. Still even today the twist still works for bullets big enough for deer, a few anyway. I have shot some deer with my present 22-250 with several different bullets, my favorite being the 60gr. Hornady hollow point which is a tough little bullet designed in the beginning as a possible deer bullet.
