Would you say the forearm on the Classic Edge is wider than an SPS SS stock? I like the ergos of the SPS, it looks like the Classic Edge is wider. My stock will go on a LA at 23-24".

If I were building on a Rem 700 LA with a #2 or #3 Brux this is the first stock I'd look at:

For comparison:
My McMillan Remington Classic short action ADL is very slightly wider in the forearm than my factory short action SPS stock.
At the front sling swivel my McMillan is 1.630. As near as I can measure at the same point from the tip(sling swivel is in a slightly different place) the factory is 1.500.
At the front action screw the McMillan Classic is 1.830 while the factory is 1.810-very close.
I know these are short actions and you were asking about a LA-just for reference.
Maybe the McMillan Mountain Rifle would be another option for you-especially if you like a slimmer forend and a cheekpiece.

I have a Hunters Edge on my .240 HS Precision SPL, which is almost a M-700 clone with a clip. I really like it. I got it from McM, unpainted, glassed it and sent it back for paint. Glad I did, as they had the bolt handle cutout way too big for my taste. I glassed filled it and shaped it like I wanted. The ballance and handling are great. It weighs 26 oz.
With an Edge fill, be sure to order it with pillars.

Now that you've had a chance to play around with it a bit, how do you like the bottom metal? I've thought about replacing my Rem 700 DBM, and it seems the HS DBM is about my only choice. How does it feel in hand? Feeding?

It's a good system. You have three rounds down with this set up, instead of five down in a conventional box mag for '06 sized ctgs. It feeds great, a center feed of course. And the mag is long enough for about any bullet seating COAL.

I haven't handled a Rem. DBM, so can't compare. The HS bottom metal isn't flat. It is concave at the mag, the factory stocks are cut up to facilitate this feature. With the McM stock, the bottom is flat, so I cut a mag well type bevel to accommodate the clip. Here's a view of the bottom, pre paint job. To me, I like this better than HS's version, just looks better. Some may say the HS clip isn't as easy to extract, but it pops down when loaded as the trigger guard latch is pushed. When empty, sometimes I open the action to push it out with my finger. As I recall seeing photos of the Rem DBM system, you have buttons on each side to release and extract the box. Empty box, that system may be easier. Full box, probably a wash.

HS's stuff isn't cheap, so I don't know if it would be worth the expense. IMO, you need to handle an HS before spending what it would take to swap it out.

Thanks DF. You're right about the expense, I think around $300 for the different bottom metal. And then I would need a new McMillan. And I would at least think about a new barrel, since I was getting everything else done...

That puts you at around $1,500 for aftermarket stuff by my count. You may want to think about selling the Rem DBM and starting over...

Oh, I'll never get rid of the rifle. My dad didn't hunt, and I only started when I was in my early 20s. My wife and I were recently married and she bought it for me for one of our first Christmas holidays together.

I could also just continue use of the Rem DBM. It's not failed me in more than 10 years of use in the field. Even worked this year.



Edited: But I keep thinking about changing the bottom metal for more "100% positive" feeding. The Rem DBM works, but I don't think it works as positively as ADL/BDL. A center feed mag would alleviate some concerns. I don't know that I'll ever get to the point that I don't watch my first round go into the chamber, and even though I normally chamber a second round I make the first one count.

I would have thought the DBM would be center feed.

Guess I need to check one out so I'll know.

The Rem DBM is a staggered (alternating) stack magazine.
