I would clean up the existing floorplate and use a Bansner stock, my preference of all and I enjoy the "work" of fitting and painting. I would add one of Kebco's lightweight recoil pads. rebarrel to 35 Whelen with a PacNor #1 at 22" and a 12 twist. Wrap-up with S&K mounts and the latest 2-7X Leupold. Then chase elk. I thought about Pacnor. A #1 would leave about .12" wall thickness. Is that enough? Would probably be thicker at 22", though. Yes. One of my Whelen's is an original M77RS and its 22" barrel goes .560". It is in a Bansner stock. I have another, a rebored J.P. Sauer pre-war Mauser that goes the same at 25". Cliff LaBounty, a legend in reboring, did a few for me over the years. He would go no less than .10" a side at the muzzle.

So thet will leave a little more meat but should still be plenty light with an Edge stock.
