I have a basket case Newton rifle looking for a replacement stock, and noticed in DiamondJim's photos of his M20, how similar the stocks look to the Newtons. Does anyone have a photo of their M20 out of the stock?

I am thinking the Newton is a very long action vs. the Savage Model 20 which is the epitome of short action.

I can't begin to see how a 1920 stock could fit a Newton. This could get interesting. Action length is way different for starters.
If you really need to see one out of the stock, I'll do it for you, but I'm getting my sh*t together to leave for turkey day/deer hunting and it'll have to wait 'til next week.
Which Newton do you have? Chambering? Would love to have an early one in .256 Newton.

I'm hoping it's a .35 or .400 Newton I don't mean to imply that the .35 or .400 would fit the M1920 action - as has been mentioned, all the Newton actions are hopelessly long to fit a M1920 action.

Yes, I have a first model 256 which has been rebored and set back as a 270win. (how about a 27 Newton?) stock was cut to about 12" LOP then a scab and recoil pad added (..woof) I had no dimensions for a model 20 since I never held one. I just noticed the visual similarities, and knew the connection between Newton and early Savage, so I thought..maybe. If the actions are different lengths then it's a non-starter. This will probably end up being a custom build someday, as there is nothing except the bolt and trigger that remains unmodified. The receiver bridge has a clumsy attempt at being drilled and tapped, I've looked for a replacement original 256 barrel for 5+ years, and the stock will never grow back.

I like the long Lyman No. 48 sight. The rifle looks like a fine hunter as it sits. The stock looks pretty nice other than the pad and, "accent" wood attached. I think it could be improved substantially by putting one of those thick style Old English solid pads on it - I think they make them up to 1 and 1/4 inches if need be. That would give you 13+ LOP which is usually fine for a hunting rifle. I recall Jeff Cooper commented most hunters routinely went too long for LOP when it came to a hunting rifle. Anyway, the original stock adds much to the rifle and I would work to salvage it. Who knows, a .256 Newton barrel just might surface some day.

Put a vintage lace up leather pad on it & use a tight enough knot that the curious will not be able to take it off easily.
