I am setting up my grandfathers's Savage 99 for son but he is left handed. Has anyone figures out how to convert or modify the lever safety for a left handed shooter??
Thanks
Doc

one of the old lefties I met who hunted a 99 told me he just reached over and released the safety with his left hand. he said he simply preferred the 99 to other levers.

I'm left handed, and have no problems using the safety as is.
The later tang safeties might be a better option, but I prefer the older rifles.

Some lefties leave the safety off and the lever just slightly open.
When they are ready to shoot they simply squeeze the lever closed.
Prolly not the best idea if you are walking with a shell in the barrel or the best practice to teach a youngin
Or if you hold the gun as if you were going to shoot it left handed you can disengage the safety pretty easily with your left thumb. You just have to get used to it and will become second nature.

I shoot left handed quite a bit (left eye dominant). You can get used to it, but it takes a while.

I'm a lefty. It's easy to adjust. If someone handed me a "lefty" rifle today, I'd no doubt screw up.

I chamber a round when I need to shoot, no need to worry about the safety.

Lefty here too! I just slide the safety off with my left thumb, not a problem IMHO.
NOT intending to flame, but I really don't tgink I could chamber a round ( cycle the lever) on a 99 while a deer was in on my stand. Hell, sometimes just a bit of frost between my boot and the stand can be too noisy. -TomT
