I called Burris today to talk to them about custom turrets and I got on the subject of glass quality in their scopes. When asked about the differences in glass in their lines, I was told that they use the same glass in all of their scopes and the price differences are based on features of the scopes alone.

I'm calling BS on that, but does anyone else have any information on the glass quality within their lines?

AFAIK this is the truth with Fullfield and Signatures and the like.. Never heard otherwise, or seen anything that made me think otherwise.

I have never owned the cheaper Timberlines and such so couldn't say. But anything Fullfield or better/higher priced, same glass IMO....

Sure seems like a large price range for the same glass which is why it made me wonder.

It's the difference in coatings that are expensive.

There are a limited number of lens sources. As HH said the difference is in the coatings. I was told by a Leica guy that they get their lenses from Zeiss, and Swarovski does also. I would guess the Burris guy was correct.

There are a zillion different types of glass alone without getting into the number of coatings, different formulations of materials used to coat the lens and the amount of polishing to the lenses themselves.

Then there are the lenths the scope maker goes to control stray light with baffling, etc. E

I was looking for a scope for paper punching with my AR and after talking with Burris I was down to the C4 and the MSR 223. They said the two scopes were the same optically except the MSR has a wire reticle versus the etched on the C4, and the turrets are different.

Cabelas is running a good sale and with $20 off and free shipping I got the MSR 4.5-14x42 for $139.99 shipped.

In the old days days Burris stated that the Fullfield and short mag scopes had one level of glass and the Sig Select/BD/ and ED scopes had another. I remember one of there old paper catalogs had a chart which said so. I would say that that matched up with my experience.

My focus is primarily on simple hunting scopes and with the changes in the last couple of years I haven't followed the new burris scopes very closely.

As much as I like their scopes, I have never spoke with (in person or on the phone) someone from Burris that new what the hell they were talking about. It's sad because they make some great products.
