Drano,

Alaska Cub reported 5" vs. 5 1/2", if I understood correctly.

My ew built in 2009 measures 5 in and weighs 29.5 oz. maybe I got lucky but it explains why I have never understood all the bulky comments.

I spoke to Winchester product rep today and he stated no change has been made to the stock. I re-asked the question, he got his supervisor on the line, and his supervisor stated that no change had been made to the stock. He stated it is the same stock they have been using. Not sure what to think. I would order the EW if it weren't for that blocky stock.

1 post, but I totally agree with you. I bought one with the blocky as hell stock (some of us call it a 2x4 for obvious reasons) and had it off of there like a prom dress after midnight as soon as I got the rifle. It was put in a micky edge and it made one hell of a difference. It was a night and day difference, to be quite frank. The B&C medalist it comes with might make a good boat oar or baseball bat...

The Winny reps probably are not aware of any changes. They most likely use the "same" stock, meaning it is still ordered directly from B&C. They wouldn't know if B&C changed molds or not.

This is similar to the difference between the "early" and "late" original Ti stocks. They changed molds randomly somewhere in the middle of the run, and the stocks got bulky overnight.

They changed the stock all right and I think Winchester is using old and new inventory when building extremes. The new version is 30" OALl the old 32" as per the customer rep at stocks same part number. I have a 26" barrel on mine so I will buy the new slimmer model and off the old one. If it had a 24" barrel It would go into an edge compact, compact or featherweight.

Well I can tell you that my M70 w/ the EW barrel in this new stock weighs about 6lbs 7 oz bare with no optics. The Win specs for this rifle in the 300 WSM states 7lbs. Call me crazy but that's a significant difference to me.

Just to update, I just measured my new EW and it also measure 5" and while I don't have the old one to measure I can tell you that this one definitely feels slimmer.

This got me curious so I just broke out the scale and tape.
2010 vintage 300wsm ew bare rifle (no rings, no mods, 24" factory barrel)
7 pd 0.5 oz total
Stock (no metal except studs) 1 pd 15.45 oz (31.45 oz)
Bolt assembly 13.65 oz
Stock length 30"
Grip circ. 5.0"

6pd 7 oz on cubs would imply a 9.5 oz weight saving on the new stock (22 oz??)

Not sure what to think, other than I want one of these new stocks if true.

EW 7mm WSM on the left and a compact EDGE stock on the right. Mine was not blocky/thick/whatever at all.
