I am a newbie to the group and I thought I would try to pick the brains of you fine gentlemen. I am thinking I would like to add a scope to one of the 99s that I have. The rifle has been drilled and tapped, so I would like to know what type of mounts you guys recommend. The serial number on this 300 savage is of 4200xx vintage. Looking to take a whitetail this fall, so plenty of time to get the setup down. Thanks for the help!

The four non-original holes on the top of the receiver look like they would fit the Weaver #14 (rear) and #19 (front).

With 260s comments, Weaver rings. Other makers produced different style rings, but to me Weaver rings look best on Weaver bases. Be sure to get the older rings with the wider diameter lock screws.

PS - nice rifle!

Sometimes you can find older Weaver rings that have Weaver stamped into them. I find those cool, but I am a bit on the simple side.

I mostly use the 2 piece Weavers as mentioned above, but there are vintage 1 piece bases that will work such as Redfield, or Leupold makes a nice 1 piece base still today. Nice thing about the 1 piece bases is that they give some windage adjustment if needed. But they will all work.

I always substituted Burris Z rings and mounts for Weavers, given a Weaver hole spacing. I liked the idea of steel on steel rather than Weaver's aluminum. It's been a while since I did that and don't know if they still make them.
