Stopped in a local gun shop yesterday and they had a new consignment in the display. It's a pre-lock and it appears pristine as far as scratches or blemishes are concerned. Cylinder lockup is as new, no loosness or play. Double action typically stiff but smooth, single action let off crisp and light.
As it was a consignment, I didn't try to dicker since the price was $595 out the door and that caught my eye. Bore clean, with some powder flakes visible, but no leading noticed. It had been shot before being brought to the shop, but the bore and chambers hadn't been cleaned. Someone had wiped down the exterior surfaces.
I bought it on impulse as the price seemed very good for the area.
It has these damnable old 1980s style Pachmayer grips where the two halves meet in a ridge on the back strap. I don't need rubber as my .44 Mag load is 240 grains at 1100fps.
Interested in hearing what others like for their N-Frames that don't involve $500 dollar exotic woods.

If it is a square butt there are lots of options... Look over on ebay and just type in Smith N Grips and lots of nice stuff comes up in the $35-100.00 range. I've picked up two sets of Herrets Classics and a set of Ahrends all for less than $50 a set. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...mith+n+grips&ghostText=&_sacat=0

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I like John Culina's grips. He goes by "Kurac" on the S&W forum, have several sets: Osage Orange, on M57: French walnut on another M57:

Thank you everybody for the suggestions.
I like them all. Oddly, since the gun is stainless, I'm in a quandary.
Appreciate the choices.
Photo to follow.

Honestly, on a stainless gun the rubber Hogue grips look fine to me, and feel good

For a comfortable, reasonably attractive, fairly priced grip I would look at the Herrett's that CDNN has been selling for years. I have them on many N-frames and they just work for me.
Conduct is the best proof of character.

My .44 Mag load is 240 grains at 940 fps, and I like the new Pachmayrs that have solid rubber on the back strap. Finger grips. Wood grips look great, though.

For field shooting I have found the Herrett's Jordon Troopers to be ideal on my 629 Mountain Revolver. Custom fit, they were about $100 when I bought them. My standard load is a 250 Keith at 1100 fps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm internet searching the suggested companies. I'll post a photo when I decide.
