They are protected here.
Don't think I would shoot one if they weren't.
They are too cool, not afraid of people , or cars.

It is fun? Here in late August and September when I go out "hunting caribou" on the tundra. (There are almost never any out there - within reach anyway but as excuses go...... . )
What is out there are birds picking blue berries. Geese, ducks, swans, ravens, seagulls, and cranes. Lots of cranes in pairs to groups of 8 or so. Everywhere you look, tho scattered.

Can't tell the number or times my heart has given a jump - but it's "only" a couple cranes, not caribous! Buggers are visible at several miles.....

In the fall here in N.TX, I see huge flocks and thousands of them on our Ranch in Stonewall county. I enjoy listening to them in the evenings.

Grandad HATED them. They can decimate a newly planted wheat field in a day!
He use to shoot at them with is trusty old .303 Enfield. Don't recall him ever hitting one, but he sure did cuss em!
