my wife loves hers....its been very reliable with wheel bearings and a couple of CV joints replaced along the way....still a very tight nice driving outfit and it gets run on gravel roads every day of the year
I'm amazed at how much experiences can vary with these vehicles...

I think that sums it up. They're like a grenade waiting to go off.

My daughter and son in law bought a new one, 2012 I believe. Had a valve issue at around 35000 miles. Replaced an entire cylinder head under warranty. Rear door electric automatic lid opener quit, and they couldn't keep the shocks, or whatever they are called, working very long. Dang thing would come down on your head. Can't think of too much else off the top of my head. A few trips in for check engine messages. They must have liked the company, cause they traded for a Dodge half ton four door 4wd.

I've had 2 so far a 99 and a 2004 - still have the 2004, no drive train issues, normal maintenance. Both of them were and have been good to me.. Better than the Ford's, GM's and Nissan's that they replaced..

The widely varying experiences may be due to the fact that there have been three "generations" of Durangos. There was the original mid-size design 1998-2003 and was based on the Dodge Dakota pickup with body-on-frame design. Second generation 2004-2009 was based on the larger Dodge Ram pickup, also body-on-frame. There was a major rework in the 2007 model, which can be thought of as the 2.5 version. The Durango was discontinued in 2009 due to poor sales.
Then, the model was re-introduced in 2011. The third generation is based on the Jeep Cherokee. Again, a major update came with the 2014 model. The 3.5 version is still current.
Reports show that Durango quality and engineering varied greatly between the "Mercedes era" and the "Fiat era."
