Zimbabwean safari guide killed by lion in same park, home to Cecil
25 Aug 2015
A Zimbabwean guide has been killed by a lion after escorting tourists on a walking safari in the country's Hwange National Park, where Cecil the lion lived before he was killed.
Quinn Swales, 40, from Harare, was savaged by what is believed to have been a male lion as he followed it on foot in the centre of the 14,000 square mile park.
Sources in the wildlife industry suggested the lion was called Naka and had been behaving aggressively towards humans and vehicles for some time. A professional hunter is believed to be seeking the lion to put him down.
Mr Swales was employed by Camp Hwange, a four-year-old photographic safari company, and was registered with Zimbabwe's Professional Hunters and Guides Association.

Other guides in the area said Mr Swales would have been carrying a hunting rifle of at least .375 mm to protect his clients and himself.
An employee of Camp Hwange, who did not wish to be named, said they were still trying to establish what happened.
"His body has gone to Bulawayo for a post mortem, and this unfortunate incident is in the hands of the police and the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority,” he told The Telegraph from the company's Victoria Falls office.

“We are also speaking with the clients who are back at the camp in the Park. We don't know the sex of the lion, nor whether or not it was known, and we don't know how Quinn died."
Mr Swales’ death at the hands of a lion comes little over a month after there was international outrage when an American hunter and his guide shot Cecil who was famous for his black mane in a private concession close to Hwange.
Zimbabwe is now seeking Dr Walter Palmer’s extradition on charges of participating in an illegal hunt while his guide, Theo Bronkhorst, has already appeared in court on a similar charge.

Trevor Lane, a well-known wildlife industry operative based in nearby Victoria Falls, said Mr Swales "would not have taken any chances".
"He was professional. I suspect it may have been a lioness, with cubs near by, and that they came across each other by surprise," he told The Telegraph.
"I understand the animal went for his shoulder and probably hit the jugular. The clients - I think they were from New Zealand - radioed the alarm back from the vehicle which was nearby. As far as I know they were all walking at the time of the attack."
He said a helicopter was sent immediately after the distress call came in, but nothing could be done. "It picked up his body. This is a highly professional company. Brilliant operation. We will find out more accurate details in the next day or two."
A source from the wildlife industry told the Telegraph he believed that the lion was a male named Naka.

"This lion had by all accounts been behaving aggressively for some time. It was even attacking safari vehicles," said another tour operator from Hwange. "As far as we know he bled to death."
A safari guide who helped to train the victim described him as “a very good guy” who started working for Camp Hwange early this year.
"Quinn was obviously going to be a great guide," he said. "I have seen him in the bush and he was very good."
A professional hunter who worked in the area said the guide’s gun would also be checked to see if he managed to fire it. "We don't yet know if he managed to fire a shot at the lion, or whether he was overwhelmed before he could shoot,” he said. “This is terrible, and it is quite a rare event."
Another Hwange National Park safari operator said he would not do game walks because he was “terrified of lions”. “But tourists want to walk with wildlife," he added.
Hwange National Park has about 500 lions at present, according to game counters.

How ironic.

Lions are dangerous? Who'd have thunk it?

Next you'll tell me crocs are dangerous.

It could have at least had the decency to eat an anti-hunting liberal.

Probably couldn't stand the smell, though...

I don't understand..... I'm sure I read that all Lion's are beautiful and would never harm anyone.

Lion's just doing what Lion's do.
The artical dosen't say but I would bet he very likely ate most of him also!

Don't be surprised when the animal lefties blame this on destabilization of the lions social structure in the entire park due to the loss of Cecil.

But... but... the guide must have done something to provoke him!

Easy answer. Female lion pissed she wasn't getting any more snuggle time with Cecil.

Slaves get what they need. Free men get what they want.
