Talk about an hour-glass figure! In the 1890's, artist Charles Gibson started a series of drawings of what were considered beautiful, shapely women. They had large busts and wasp waists. Like Victoria's Secret girls, the Gibson girls, as they came to be called, were copied by women all over the country. The corsets used to get the wasp waists caused all kinds of health problems, kind of like how the ultra high platform shoes today cause long lasting foot problems. I read that some women went so far as to have their bottom ribs removed to be able to cinch it down tighter. That might be urban legend, though.
