30-20-10 alternating sides of the range and it starts when the instructor says go. Not the first shot.

Nothing less then 30/06 cartridge is allowed. Although I saw a few guys in my life with 7mm and 308 get through?

Interesting how strict some rules were followed and how others were not enforced by various instructors.

As I said if the bullet hole tore the line on the paper target it would not count. But the 458 is a giant hole! A .308 bullet closer to the line did not touch the line and it was good. The instructors seemed to be very literal about the rule!

I'll also add this. When 30-40 people are watching you there is an additional level of pressure. It's good to add the pressure to simulate some stress.

I've watched some really great shooters blow this test that I would trust with my life. I've also seen plenty of bolt action mishaps, malfunctions, and just plain failures with all sorts of guns. Everything works on the bench rest!

I guess your idea of low and ready is the best definition. Definitely not shouldered and ready to squeeze the first one off!

They also mix up the targets right to left which is seemingly a non-issue. However after a day of shooting at them and then getting to the "main event" you throw the gun up and there is no target, it's on the opposite side. No big deal? The difference between 9.7 seconds and 10.1 seconds happens frequently enough!

For those in doubt set up 3, 4" square targets at 30, 20 and 10 meters. Then have somebody time you with a stop watch and see if you can nail them freehand with a rifle 30 caliber or bigger...... say .308 or 30/06 class or bigger.

The hole must be completely inside the black square, if it breaks the line it does not count. So I guess it's more accurately a 3.6" square "hit" area depending upon the bullet diameter.

This is not the only firearm qualification requirement, there is an extensive written exam on firearm knowledge as well. However this is the one that breaks most guys down and has taken it's fair share of failures and drop outs.

Thanks... This would be a high or low ready position but not an on-target ready...

JJ..you said there seems to be some suprise as to where the first target might be..is it eyes closed or back to target?

I have some of the below targets and will draw a light line 4x4" kill zone around the eyebox area..
