Before I bought my first safe I was keeping firearms under the bed and in the closet. Every time we came back from away the first thing I would do as we neared the homestead was verify the house was still there. When I got in the house one of the first things I would do would be to look for signs of break-in and verify the guns were still there.

When we decided to buy a safe we looked at construction, fire rating, size, weight and cost. We were putting kids through college so cost was a big factor. So was weight as my wife and I planned on saving money by hauling it home and moving into our house by ourselves, using piano dollies.

We ended up with a tumbler-type 28-gun Browning safe that was on sale. It had a weight that was at the upper limits of what we could handle. It was not fire-safe as we didn’t want the extra weight or cost and I’ve always figured if the house burns I have much bigger problems that buying new firearms. We have had to move the safe once since we got it, when I replaced carpet with oak floors. If it were to do over I’d make the same choice, at least in terms of construction, etc.

I bought an Amsec last summer. Very nice but the interior setup is poor. My old, smaller Liberty held more guns. I need to build a custom gunrack based on design & dimensions of the Liberty I had.

My next safe will be made by Bear safes in OKC. They use a keyed lock which is hard to find now.

You can't have one too big. It's harder to steal and holds more. A 30 gun safe will hold 30 .410 shot guns or 20 bolt action rifles

Good read, thanks. I have one of the Amsec BF safes and feel it was a good buy for the money. I keep it in a tightly confined closet, and it's bolted down, so I expect an intruder would have a very hard time of it.
