Good solid points.

210 doesn't seem light for a mono in .338. What do you think is optimal?

While I agree with this, the combo is very workable.

I tend to think of 308...30'06...300wm as shooting increasingly heavier bullets at similar speeds more than any other metric.

Since those are both solid copper bullets, the 165 seems about perfect to me in the 300, whereas the 210 in the 338 is toward the lighter side of things (though a perfectly acceptable lightness; and I've caught heavier monos in the caliber in moose - and caribou). The Federal load in the 300, besides a nice speed edge, also uses a tipped bullet as well. But again, either will leave little for which to find excuses if a fellow doesn't pull his part of the bargain. (How's that for parsing the gack in Looneyville? laugh )

Edited to add what I was thinking initially in my previous post. The two choices are so equally suited, I know I'd be looking at the rifles themselves to decide the better suited. The better-carrying, better balanced for offhand shooting rifle would be my pick. smile

I prefer 225 grains if the case is big enough to boot it out decently.

The Barnes pictured above is the first Barnes copper I ever fired at an animal and it 'shouldered' a big bull before coming to rest in a blister under the skin. That was with a 340 Weatherby at somewhat under 200 yards. Normally I, and many moose hunters I think, use 250 grains when using lead-cored in their 338s. Dropping a step to 225 seems about right on these big deer. In the same way, the 180 is easily the most common weight in the 300 mags for moose up this way, so the 165 mono seems about right.

But again, my initial thought if this was me, neither load seems lacking and I would be considering what I'd rather carry through swamp and over dale, and which I would prefer to swing and shoot in the brush.

I live in northern BC and have lots of experience hunting moose. I have taken moose with several calibers from 25/06 to 338wm as have my friends. Under ideal conditions most centre fire calibers will get a moose down, but my go to is my 338 with 225 np's.

If you can shoot your 338 as well as your 300 win mag bring the 338 and if you have a tough shot you will be well prepared.

Good luck and enjoy your hunt.

12Oclock, My wife has used 225 Barnes(from the original X bullet to the TTSX) since around 94-95. From Prong Horn, bear, elk, moose. All have been one shot kills(except for one slightly misplaced shot),from around 30 yrds. to 400. We've yet to recover a bullet. If you want the recovered bullet for photo opt's, Don't use the Barnes. If you want supreme performance, Barnes is hard to beat! memtb
