Going to build a rifle for long range hunting. Which action would be best and which bullet would be best. Going to be 1000-1500yds. Looking at Deviant action, and berger or MTAC bullets. Just looking for guys that have built one that have honest information. Thanks. HAPPY HUNTING

I built mine on a Rem-700 action. Moved the bolt stop back to allow a 3.9" loaded overall length. Also Seekin detachable box magazine. I shoot 92 grains of H-1000 behind a 300 grain SMK. I have taken deer and elk with this combo.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

If i was building it would be the 338 RUM over the Lapua .

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

The RUM cartridge is longer than the 338 Lapua and the RUM throat is loooong. Just food for thought.

Probably the safe way to go since the 700 action was never intended to have .588 diameter rounds put through it. The RUM is at .534.

It is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.

I went with a Rem. action 338 RUM #4 contour barrel works great. Not too heavy.

Take a look at the Nesika Model M action. Its designed around the 338 Lapua and they have an option to increase the action diameter it desired.

I have one in a 338-416 Rigby Imp. and it drives the 300 Berger at 3050 fps - you will need a good break.

You can order a reamer with shorter throat. I'd choose RUM or Edge over Lapua in a Remington action.

The Cooper Long Range Series looks like a good place to start for a 338 Lapua?

I built mine on a BAT action, like jwp475 I also use the 300grSMK with H1000 (on current barrel it seems to like RL25 better) This combo will cleanly take any animal you choose to use it on. I have used it to take from Rock Chuck's to moose.

My friends are using the Bergers in their rifles but I have never found a reason to switch

Sender 300 Rum.. 230 OTM at 2900 fps shoots .332 with 88 grains of H1000 and fed 215s. Why go 338 lapua ballistically and $ wise ?

If I was interested in shooting a .338 Lapua, I would just buy one of the many slightly used Sako TRG 42s that are out there,

Guys buy them because they think they will be super cool, then quickly come to the realization that a gun that shoots $5 bills causes the fun factor to greatly diminish.

Very hard to beat a TRG-42 though.

That beats the heck out of the custom rifle roulette.

A 338 RUM will run right with a 338 Lapua for a lot less $$$.

For 1K to 1500 yards, I would run some heavy Bergers or the 220 grain SMK in a .300WM, instead of any .338.

That's a nice rifle, and an overall beautiful pic.
