Been getting mail from American Gunsmithing Intitute that seems to use kind of shady sales tactics, imho. Is there a reputable school centrally located near Oklahoma!? This partially disabled Vet needs a career change for a possible move to Alaska in future. Also are there any Vet edu benefits that would help cover tuition, as i live on less than $580/mo thanks to VA's endless denying of claims... Any help is super appreciated!

I would suggest Colorado School of Trades.
Or Trinidad.
Just because of the number of highly sought after Gunsmiths came from these two. Of course there are others, but these would be my top two.

Murray State College in Tishomingo,OK has a gunsmithing program, it was started by one of my instructors from the program at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, CO. Two words regarding mail order courses, forget it! Some of my fellow students at TSJC were veterans using their veteran education benefits.

This ^^^...It is close for you and has an excellent program. John Bohon, a former student of Trinidad and long time instructor at Murray State is now running the program.Thomas "Speedy" Gonzales, infamous for the rifles he builds and matches he's won and long time instructor at Trinidad is now at Murray State. They do right by veterans too. The fishing and hunting is great around Tish too!!! Good luck!

I'll endorse the CO School of Trades as well. I've taken a few items in there for work and been very pleased with what the students do. I've talked to many of the folks down there and will keep referring people to them.

I've seen 20 year olds, on up to 55 or so come in from the shop and ask for something. When using the restroom, there are all ages back there. Some looking for a new career, some for hobbies, some for the first career.
You can call and ask, I'll bet they'll tell ya

To the extent that you can a visit to the schools while they are in session and having classes would be money well spent. Ask what are the expectations of the school for the students to graduate. Ask them what the finals are like. That will give you a good idea of the expectations.
Find out what the programs are and which offers the most advanced program that you are interested in. Repair versus custom work, metal work versus wood work etc. Find out about independent studies. Don't make a decision until you you can make an educated decision.
When you graduate find a real gunsmith and go to work for him. Don't think of that as work, Think of that as continuing your education. If you can get on with an older shop with a great reputation your knowledge and experience will grow out of proportion to the time spent.
Have fun and remember what you get out of any program is based on what you put into it.
I went to Trinidad and then Pachmayrs. Never regretted any of it.

WOW, THANKS ALL! Had to take a break and get car work done while nice out. I have machining experience since high school in '87 lol. Lots of lathe work and sone milling already. Never had teacher, learned by book, common sense and doing it. Can also TIG quite well. Whole life is mechanical and electrical experience. Some frown on it but I routinely do minor smithy work to all my factory rough actions, lapping, polishing, bedding, deburring, etc . Always deep research first with excellent results. Won't attempt brake installs, threading, barrels etc without proper teaching first. A wise man knows his limits lol. Not really interested in black guns, I like making long distance tack drivers and hunters. Guess Im rambling on but I will be contacting Toshimingo because of proximity and asking them about the tuition help options. Ill say it again, you guys on this site are the best anywhere! Ps, yea the back n neck are kaput now at 47yrs old, This is why the interest in something I already love doing. Daily mechanic work just can't be done anymore ;-)

Put my son in Colorado School of Trades before he was 18, had to sign a waiver to get him in. This was back in 1987 & he's done very well & there were a lot of vets enrolled in the program at that time. Not sure how much help they were getting but I know they were getting some. I would guess over half the class were vets. Good luck in your new career & thanks for your service.
