Thanks, Woody, that's good to know.

I am also sitting here looking at some .45-70 cases, 540 grain bullets, and BH209, so you know where this might go...

Been having some good results with BH and the 45/70...excellent accuracy with very small shot to shot velocity variation. My pet load is the Lyman 457643 cast 30:1 [ 435grs] over 35.5 grs of BH..Velocity is 1253 which is a ballpark for BP loads.

You mention 35.5 grains, is that volume or weight, and does the powder need to be compressed?

I ended up having to change scope settings with one 10 ounce container of BH 209. It simply had a different but consistent POI.

Hope to be able to set impact point with the 4 containers and be set for awhile.

I like Blackhorn 209 for my application. I am not a lover of BP rifles and have the two inlines just to be able to extend my hunting season and to hunt other areas in the country.

Cartridge loading is strictly by weight and no compression necessary with even allowable airspace between bullet and powder so unlike BP SOP's however I do use an over powder wad even if the data doesn't reflect the need only as a precaution to eliminate lube migration on hot days.

That load for my 45/70 is about perfect using a .060 card wad I have zero airspace for 100% load density. I think you'll like it just too bad its so dang pricey.

Thanks!

I know you and a couple others here are pretty knowledgeable about the Black powder cartridge stuff, and Blackhorn looks like it's a natural for that application.

I shot some Beartooth bullets Piledrivers today, but using H322 as the propellant. I couldn't help but think about loading some up with BH. Though my loads today were going from 1530 fps to 1556 fps, I'd still have complete confidence in a bullet that heavy running in the mid 1200 fps region. Those performance figures have proven themselves.

Roger on the price, but it's a good powder so I don't mind it too much.

There's a little shop near me that had quite a bit of BH209 on the shelf earlier this fall. I think it'd been there a while as I picked up 2 cans at $32 each. I didn't realize it had gotten so expensive. I think I'll drop back in and see if they've got any left! Another couple cans would look good on my shelf.

Gander Mountain always has it in their stores around western PA. Maybe try their website.
