From serial number search rifle was made in 1904. It has a 26" octagon barrel. The action is tight with no visible rust anywhere. The crown looks good though I could not inspect the bore very well. Bluing surprisingly nice and only handling marks on the stock. On top of receiver where it slopes down to stock there are two overly long screws protruding from metal--looks like replacement screws that are too long. I know very little about Savages. Gun is on consignment asking even $1000. If the bore is in good shape, what would you pay? Thanks

The screws are left over from a tang sight. Should have plugs in them.

Savage didn't really crown the early barrels. It should be flat on the muzzle.

It's an 1899 B. Not rare at all. Price sounds high to me but can't get a real feel for the condition. The way you describe it, it sounds decent though. I'd be interested in the $700 range.

In the end it's your decision and good Savage specimens are a lot farther apart than they used to be. If you 'feel' it, buy it.

It's an 1899B. If it's as good as you say it is, it's worth a grand. The 2 screws you mention sound like they may be mounting screws for a missing tang sight. Posts without pictures are just that. Posts without pictures so all you get is an educated guess.

That's correct, the muzzle is flat. Wrote crown when I should have used muzzle.

Pictures would let us tell you a lot more about it. Octagon barreled 1899's were made from 1899 to about 1917, then discontinued. So not rare, but bring a premium over the round barreled ones which are more common.
