A new to me 700 ss sps. A couple nights ago I mounted my talleys, lapped them, and buckled up a new VX-3i. Come to think of it, I didn't even clean the tube before going to the range. No bore site or adjustment. Get to the range today first shot at 50 for sight in is right where it needs to be. Next shot at 100 bingo. I turned it 4 up and shot and 4 down and shot. Tracks right. Couple more and put it up. Purely by dumb luck I mounted this scope and it was dead on 2" high at 100 where I typically set a 308.
Anyone ever had this happen by chance?

Congrats. Usually don't happen like that for me. Sounds like you did everything by the book. I usually do OK? but it takes time.

Well still it's dumb luck that this scope happened to be exact on point given that I did nothing g to adjust the reticle prior. No way those stars ever line up again.

I once did something similar with a Ruger #1. Put an NECG peep sight on it, put a fiber optic front sight on it, and let fly at 50 yards, shooting offhand. The first three shots were solidly in the black. This result pleased me a great deal as it was a .458 Win Mag, and I was shooting full power 500gr loads. After firing three good shots I called the day a success and went home!

Next time we get together around a real fire ask me about the time my friend in a wheel chair fired his 458 the first time.

No "link" and damned if I can remember who was telling me about this,....
"This" being that Leupold is shipping their VX series with the windage knobs / turrets already neutral, e.g same # detent clicks in either direction / at optical center.

Damned good idea, that.

I also have gotten lucky like that....... exactly once in 30 years, and God only knows how many guns.

No but I've bought quite a few that were already zeroed the first time I took them to the range.

Something similar. Years ago with a Remington LSS 30/06 Mountain Rifle and a Leupold scope in lapped rings I set up on the bench at our hunting club to bore sight the scope. Bore sighting on a small spot on the backstop it looked pretty close but just a little bit left. I adjusted the scope three clicks right and then fired three shots. Dangit! They were 2" hi and about 3/4" right so I moved the scope back three clicks left and there I was...all set.

This was a hodge podge of parts. Bought a ss sps sitting in a B&c medalist for a really great deal on gunbroker, got a tuned trigger from 805 here, and a new vx3i from warpig here. And while lapping the talleys it appeared by the lap marks that the front holes might have been off center by a cooter hair. Mounted it anyway and tightened them down carefully (hopefully no stupid marks on the scope tube). First shot today made me chuckle.

I had it happen last year. Bought a Cooper and Swarovski Z3 from my dealer. When everything came in he mounted the scope....I paid him WAAAYYYY too much money and went home. Tweaked the scope to where I wanted it and bore sighted it. Went to the range that weekend and shot 7 3 shot groups with my 257 Roberts handloads at 100 and 200 and never touched the scope. Killed 2 deer with it this last deer season! Maybe that was my karma for spending so much money.....

Of course you realize that even if the bore and the reticle are perfectly matched, that has little to do with where the bullet will hit paper.

Same here. The only exception was an old 336 I bought with a K2.5 Weaver on it. It was right on from the get-go, but never that lucky on any gun where I mounted the scope-even when I bore-sighted them, I've always had to do some adjustments.

Not on a scope but I have on load development, three times. Made it pretty anti-climactic.
