Just now got home from a hog eradication expedition at the farm. Have film of hogs running deer off their feeders. Ambushed a big 250-300 lb female at 9:05 pm. Used one of our obsolete .30-06 rifles and a hand load with 56 grains IMR 4350 and a little 150 grain Hornady (obsolete) interlock. It was night and as usual I shot for the middle of the ribs, so it was a good but not perfect hit. Hog sprayed blood every where she went which was not far. Complete pass through and very dead hog using an obsolete rifle, powder, and bullet, not to mention me being an obsolete hunter. I know there are better rifles out there but I just feel better with a .30-06, can't explain why. Last year I offered to give my son a .308W I had traded for as a Christmas gift. He said heck no, he wanted a .30-06.

Good to know Hastings...I didnt know the 30-06 was obsolete and chose one for my winter "project" rifle. Also chose-you guessed it- the 150 gr. Hornady interlock.....I suppose when I run out of bullets I'll toss the whole obsolete mess in the garbage and get a 6.5 Creedmoor...

I like the idea of hunting one of those. The idea of packing one out is something else again!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
