Ok, I have a new rifle coming in Friday (Thanks Bill Davis!!!) and I'll be loading for it this weekend. It's a Remmy 700 DM mt. rifle in .260 remington. I've purchased because my right shoulder is killing me right now (yes, the doc and I are working on it) and it doesn't like my M70 FWT .30-06 recoil with 165 gr. slugs and I'm chasing mule deer in a few weeks. Plus, it's a good excuse to buy a beautiful rifle! I'll be shooting 130 gr. Nosler Accubonds at deer. Any recommended 129 gr. or 130 gr. loads with this rifle? I know it's all up to what the rifle likes, but a starting point would be ok. I have IMR4350, 4831, H380, H414, IMR 7828, and IMR 4895 available for experimenting. I'm guessing the 4350, 4831, or H414 will be my best bet, but your experiences are appreciated.
Sincerely,
Selmer

I have a Remington 700 LMSS in a Ti stock, so very similar rifle.

I'm getting the best accuracy with 129 Hornady bullets with a load of Reloder 15 I'd rather not post, since some of the books don't care for it. It's producing 2900 fps, sub-MOA groups, and showing zero signs of excess pressure, so I'm not concerned about it. For a hint, go to the newest Nosler manual and look at their 125 gr loads. Then you can do whatever your rifle and sense of caution will allow grin.

H 414 is giving me the best results with 120 gr TSX's. Running those at 2930 fps, so I know I can go a little harder. They're running around an inch, and accuracy seems to be improving as speed and thus pressure goes up.

Good luck -- it is a fun little cartridge, with essentially no recoil.

I've run 414 and 4350, both Hodgdon....
I now stick with just H4350...

Never ran a 130 though but figger I'd thrown in what has worked for me...

R19 works well for me with 120-129 gr bullets. I have put a Hornady 129 gr through 5 deer here in Mi and all have passed through and dropped the animal within 15-25 yds max, at ranges of 20 ft up to ~80 yds. H4350 is my second choice with the 120 gr Nosler BT, a case full with a Re, 9 1/2 primer is a great load.

125 partitions over 43-44gr of H4350 runs at 2900fps with good accuracy and no pressure signs.

129 SST over 43 grains does about 2850 with good accuracy, 44gr was starting to flatten primers.

I want to shoot the 120-130 range bullet myself, but as my picture shows I should be shooting factory 140's. Any of you shooting a Kimber Montana in 260? Thats what mine is and I couldnt find any data using H4350 in Noslers manual. I have run into a bit of pressure with some loads in it, but I have had the crown re-worked at Kimber and felt I needed to start over on some of the loads I gave up on for accuracy.( prefer 125gr Nosler PT. or 120gr. TSX Barnes)

47.8gr H4831 behind the 129gr Interlock has grouped well, and averages 2860fps from my Browning Low Wall.

I shoot usually 95 gr Vmax and 100 Nosler BT and load 41 gr Varget with both and also tried the 129 gr with 45 gr of H 4350 and liked them .They all grouped very well.
You will really enjoy shooting and reloading the 260 it is an outstanding caliber and very impressive as to what it will do.

There are few bad choices for bullets in the 260 and few powders that won't perform well..

I think the 125 Nosler is the best compromise in all around bullet category...

The 140 grain Corelokt group shown above, is fair in my book.. the Rem Corelokts in both my Rugers will do better than that...

Those darn Rem bullets are even more accurate than the Sierra Match bullets are in both of my 260s...

My load for those is 44 grains of IMR 4350 for an MV of 2750 fps from a 22 inch barrel...That is the load in one of my 260s with a 4 power scope...

My main 'go to' load for deer is 43.5 grains of IMR 4064, and a 100 grain bullet... for an MV of 3350 fps out a 22 inch barrel...
300 yd shots are as easily done as 100 yd shots with this load...

and neither have ever failed to be lethal.....

I think the 260 is the most "balanced" deer cartridge ever marketed in the USA, and "Designed" if you will, in the USA...

I wouldn't be without a couple in the rifle safe....

I have been breaking my Savage 260 barrel in with 36.0 grs. of Varget and the Hornady 129 gr. SST. This load is very soft shooting and accurate.

Doc,
Have any idea how fast these loads are running? I'm shooting 38.2 of Varget behind a Nosler 120BT and they are running right around 2500. I would like to get it up around 2900.

My guess is about 2650 FPS, My chronograph is at my hunting buddys house and I generally don't run my loads thru the screens until accuracy load developement is done.

My groups are just under .9 for 3 shoots with this load,I always have 2 touching and the 3rd always opens the group up.

Mathman,
Thanks for the info...I think I did my ladder testing up a little over 39gr but had no idea what the velocity was until later. It was then that I figured mine were running slow. I might try a new load with the same bullet (Nosler 120BT) but use IMR4350 instead. Thoughts?

The 4350s have worked well for me, and Reloder 19 is really good with the 120s too. Don't summarily drop the Varget though, I got nice accuracy results at 40 grains under the 120 Ballistic Tips but I can't put my hands on the relevant chrono data. Expect approximately 2900 fps though.

Well I found out today that a 100 grain Hornady with a charge of 4.35 grains of IMR 4064, while certainly take a blackbear at about 40 yds.. albeit a 125 to 130 lb one here, so we aren't really talking that much of an accomplishment..

Is the wgt of the bear in pounds, related to the powder charge in grains by some ratio? grin

Congrat`s on the bear! It`s always good to hear of success in the field, B&C trophy or not.
