Since you are looking for an inexpensive route how about a single shot? I bet rechambering or rebarreling an H&R Handi Rifle would not cost to much. A conversion based on a Ruger NO.1 or a Browning Low Wall would cost a lot more but would certainly be interesting.
I want a repeater. You are correct the Handi Rifle would be a cheaper way to do it. I used to have a Ruger NO 1 Varmint in 25-06 and it was a heavy rifle. Never owned a Browning Low Wall, but they do look nice and it would be interesting indeed.
