Bullet weight and velocity give recoil. I shoot the Speer 300 grain over a full charge of Re7 in my 1895XLR.
I have an original 1879 Springfield carbine that was re-lined by Bob Hoyt and the 405 jsp at 1240 fps is way milder to shoot but trajectory drops of quickly compared to the full power loads in the Marlin.
