I think the final count is 142 significant variations of 58 different models.

That's not counting things like the 800,000 rifles as a variation, different calibers as variations, different barrel lengths as variations, or counting very small groups of transition rifles, late rifles with a mixture of early model features, etc. So the blued DE's got a mention, but there weren't enough made to become a 'variation'. On the other hand, a few hundred octagon barreled 99C's were enough to be a variation.

142 production variations that were catalogued or made in significant numbers.

That's a lot of variations... wonder if we'll find more postmil variations?

PS: A few instances, like the 1927-1928 group of 99's that were made with a mirror blue, could be argued that they should be a separate variation. I noted the change, but in the end didn't make them a separate variation. I'd love to see the ledger entries for some of those..
