I guess I did it all wrong, since she was going to be hunting from a blind I had her practice from a chair off of a shooting tri-pod.

You're over thinking this,
130 ttsx will do the trick.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Not really, I ordered 200 TTSX 130's for my daughter.

I'm digging everywhere for a 300 savage 130 TTSX OAL measurement for a savage 99. Trimmed to 1.861 and the nose cone of .700 gives 2.561 as a shortest possible configuration. I can say that 2.600 oal did not work. Testing with several recipes. I was hoping someone could chime in and and help me save 20 or 30 rounds. I'm thinking that 2.575 - 2.585 is where things will happen. Thanks in advance

The 130 gr TTSX has a low end/minimum impact velocity for expansion of 1800 fps which should give a 1.5x diameter expansion. If you want closer to 2x diameter expansion bump that number up to 1900 fps. Should work quite well in a 300 Savage.

Try 0.010” off the lands. That’s worked in every rifle and round I’ve tried Barnes TTSX or LRX’s from 80 grains to 280 grains.

Maybe I’m confused- are there different degrees of dead?

Shooting under 250 yards with 130-150 grain Barnes .308 bullets through elk vitals over 2000 FPS is going to produce dead elk. They are tough so I’d be ready to follow up but that is true with 180’s out of my 300 Weatherby.

If you insist on geeking out on ballistics tables - good for you. But it doesn’t make a hill of beans difference in the real world.

Under 300 yards in general heavy for caliber bullets with excellent ballistic coefficients & sectional densities, normal wind, 4,000 feet of altitude or 40 degrees of temperature are immaterial. I realize this takes some of the fun arguments away but it is true. The biggest variable is always the operator who shakes, wiggles & jerks more than all the other factors combined. So have confidence & put one behind the shoulder & use a sharp knife.

Since you are likely to keep obsessing about her recoil sensitivity give her your 30-06 to shoot loaded at minimum levels with 110 grain bullets to practice at first. Worked like magic for my grandson at 14 he was shooting max load 180’s no problem. When you move up have her start out shooting off hand so recoil seems minimal.

I trained a novice 115 lb woman getting ready for a hunting show to handle my lightweight 375 H&H - no big deal for her & she nailed my charging Buffalo & the one on the show too. This thing kicked like a mule, one of my nephews has a scar on his eyebrow to attest to the kick. Women can handle recoil it just takes some practice & a real reason to put up with it.
