A friend has a Remington 600 Mohawk with a bad barrel. He has found a Rem 700 sporter 6mm barrel? Can this barrel be fitted without any major modications? Are the action threads the same and what about tenon length?

Thanks for any information.

I bought a near new take off Rem700 stainless fluted 24" .243 barrel to replace the worn out barrel on my mid 90's 700BDL .243

The gunsmith told me it probably wouldn't fit and he was right. It would only screw in a few turns before stopping.

He had no problems fitting it though, it just took a little gunsmith magic.

You must 'fit' all barrel swaps for correct headspace. My most accurate hunting rifle is a M600 with a M700 barrel. Easy swap. PacNor used to sell take-offs for $75 and guarantee results even after fitting. They'd give you your money back if not satisfied. That's where I got mine. In club 'hunting rifle bench rest meets' firing 20 rounds on 4 targets, this rifle averages .8" and wins consistently.

I have installed several Remington 700 barrels on my 600 and 660 actions. The TPI count and tenon/shank diameters are the same, but all of them needed some machine work to get the factory roll-stamps to index/time and to headspace correctly. It generally isn't a hard job, but it is time consuming because the barrel has to go on and off the rifle at least twice.

Also, I always change the recoil lug when I install a 700 barrel on a 600/660 action, as the 600/660 recoil lugs don't follow the contour of the barrel and action, rather they extend above the barrel/action intersection.

I did just that to change my Rem 660 from .243 to 7mm-08. LOVE that rifle, and my gunsmith didn't have any complaints.
